The Court of Appeal has decided that incomes derived by colonists in England from possession beyond England, is exempt from taxation if not remitted to England. Colonel Hope, reporting on the heavy guns, says they are liable to burst every time, owing to the ignorance which prevails regarding the method of loading and firing. Sir Andrew Walker, Bart., formerly Mayor of Liverpool, has given £300,000 for the erection of a cathedral at Liverpool, Mr Pritchard Morgan has been restrained under injunction from removing gold from Gwyn Ynudd, near Dolgelly, North Wales, without permission of the Crown.
Irish landowners are asking Parliament to advance another £5,000,000, under Lord Ashbourne’s Act,
April 30. Mr Chesson, Secretary to the Aborigines’ Protection Society, is dead. A collision occurred off the Needles, Isle of Wight, yesterday, between the ships Moto and Smirma. The latter was bound for Sydney with a general cargo. The weather was thick, and the Moto struck the Sminna amidships, The Smirma sank rapidly. A boat from the Moto picked up fif;een of the Bmirma’s crew, whilst three others jumped on the Moto’s hows. Twelve persons were drowned, including Gapt, Taylor and the pilot. The Smirma carried no passengers. None of the Moto’s crew were injured, and sire sustained little damage. The Rev. Mr Spurgeon declines to accept the compromise effered by the Baptist Union, A tremendous panic has occurred in the tin market. Owing to the French syndicate ceasing to buy, the price of tin has dropped by over £SO per ton, and present quotations do not exceed £lO5 per lor., .Mr Philips, Horne Ruler, has been elected for Lanarkshire (Mid.) in place of Mr Stephen Mason resigned. Die defeated candidates were Mr Bonsfield, Conservative, and Mr Hardie, labour candidate.

Melbourne, April 30, The City Council have purchased from the Government the land where the City Court glands. The price paid for the land was £140,000. May 1, Edwards, theatrical agent, yesterday attempted to murder a man, whom he alleged was on too familiar terms with his wife. Edwards drew a revolver and fired twice without effect. A compromise has been effected between the Government and the captain of the steamer Afghan, by which the latter foregoes his right to land twelve Chinese, which he is entitled to do, on the Government agreeing not to fine him ±,IOO per bead for all in excess of the number. Arrangements are b -ing made for the transhipment of the Chinese passengers booked for New Zealand. The Government have prohibited the landing of all Chinese passengers for the future. Sydney, April 30. A new goldfield has discovered ao Oooraa, and eight miles of country have been pegged off. The Bank of New Snulh Wales has declared a dividend of 15 per cent for the year, with a tonus ol 2£ per cent. ‘ May 1. Experiments with M P«steur’.> microbes are now being carried out. Numbers of rabbits which had been inoculated with the microbes on Saturday were found alive and healthy on
Monday. . The experiments are not regarded as conclusive, as some of the microbes may retain their virulence. The agentf of M. Pasteur will probably cultivate fresh microbes.
Druitt, manager of the Commercial Bank at Timoree, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling £ISOO. Adelaide, May 1. A fatal tram accident occurred yesterday. A buggy containing Mr Hamblyn, his wife, and a man, was crossing the line when it was dashed into by one of the cars, Hamblyn was killed outright, and his wife was so severely injured that she ia not expected to recover. The third occupant of the buggy is also seriously injured. Brisbane, May 1.
Difficulty has arisen ov*t the sculling race arranged between Trickett and Hanlan to be rowed on the Fitzroy river on -Saturday. The final deposit by Hanlan was not paid on the due dale, and Trickett claims that he has forfeited his previous deposits. Hanlan objects to Trickett receiving the amount, and guys the balance of the stakes was posted in lime to reach Queensland when due, and must be delayed in transmission. Trickett persists in his demand for tiie money. £IOOO to £BOO has been laid on Hanlan,
