Da SlliVKSTßE.— There was a good attendance in the Oddfellows' Hall, Temuka, last Tuesday evening, when Dr Silvester gave hie entertainment. The doctor had his band bandaged, and consequently did not perform any illusionist tricks, but said he would give a free entertainment next Friday evening. All he did was to giro an exhibition of his ventriloquial powers, which are not great, and to deliver a very excellent stump speech, with blackened face. This certainly was the best thing of the evening. Mdle. Zingori recited several pieces, but we must say honestly that she is not by any means an elocutionist. She also told fortunes, and had a good number of clients, from whom she extracted extra fees. It was advertised that everyone would receive a gift, but those who went there in the hope of getting something must have been disappointed when they were handed the munificent gift of a single lolly and such tnlles. Dr Silvester said there was nothing in either ventriloquism or legerdemain but deception. He practices the art even to the gifts degree. The doctor gave a similar performance at Geraldine on Monday evening, and announced that he would give a free entertainment on Thursday evening. We notice that he is advertised to appear in Ashburton on Thursday evening for a short season. How the doctor ean be in Ashburton, Geraldine, and Temuka at the same time is inexplicable. Perhaps he may do it by deception. At any rate our friends ought to assure themselves that he will keep his promises before coming any distance to attend hia entertainments. The fact is, we do not think he can be amusing a Temuka audience free and an Ashburton audience for money at the same time. It can’t be done.
