It ii not thought the animal waa shot purposely, but it is presumed that some careless sportsman did the mischief. Escape op a Prhonir.— On Saturday morning Jonathan Roberts, who waa sentenced at the Supreme Court on Tuesday to five years’ imprisonment for horse stealing, made his escape from the Timaru gaol immediately after he had been let out of his cell for exercise. It appears that the warder on duty had omitted to close theldoor that opens from the corridor (where the prisoner was exercising) into the grounds, and Roberts seising the opportunity dashed past the warder, On his way out, however, he managed to seise a suit of clothes from the clothes closet. Bo alio had to pass, aud was pursued for a short distance by, Mr Swann, the gaoler. The polisa were at once informed by telephone of the occurrence, but, beyond finding the clothes worn by the prisoner when he he escaped, found no traces of him although the search throughout >he day was a very hot one. On Sunday and yesterday the search was again prosecuted but without avail. Captain Hume, Inspector of Prisons, was in Timaru, and at once held m enquiry, the report being forwarded to Wellington. The warder who was on duty at the time Roberta escaped, immediately tendered his roslgnatou, but Captain flume declined to receive it. Football. —The first mntoh of the English team in BVw Zealand took plica in Dunedin on Saturday, when they played against a Unitsd Otago team. During th* first half of the game Otago had much the beat of it, and when tima was called fcho score stood : Otago 3, English 1. In the second spell, however, the Englishmen played a rougher and quicker game, and bad all the beet of it, adding seven point! to their icore, while Otago failed to score at all. Saviour’s Church, Temuka, was reopened on Saturday afternoon. On this occasion the weather was all that conld be desired, and, the attractions being many and the admiasion free, the attendance wan large, In last Thursday's issue we gave a detailed description of the bazaar. In it, however, we omittad to mention that the Christmas tree, a very fine specimen of its kind, was given by Mr W. (Sweet. On Saturday afternoon and evening an additional attraction, iomi good music, was provided. The piano was lent by Mr Foster, am) a Dumber of ladies kindly plsysd selections. Mr Cooke contributed a song, which was duly appreciated. The ladies in charge of 'ho stalls were as busy as ever in disposing of tboir warea, and the buyers wers fairly plentiful. About 9 o’clock Mr K. F. Gray commenced to auction the produce, and after be had concluded Mr Cooke conducted a Dutch 'auction, Thanks are due to all who helped forward the bizaar, and especially to Mr Gray in conducting the auction. It is hoped that the amount netted will be about £6O, and this includes a handsome donation of £5 from Mr Gladstone, who sent it in lieu of some sheep, which he was prevented by the wet weather from sending.
