FLOUR AND BREAD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— l want you, if you will be so kind, to inform the public of this district how it is that we have to pay the miller and storekeeper 11s and 12s for ] 001 b of flour, and the baker 6d for 41b of bread, now that wheat is so exceedingly cheap, viz., 2s 4d per bushel. Either the jolly millers or the dusty bakers, and may be both, are making a fine thing out of the public. No wonder that millers and merchants can flash about in grand buggies and traps behind high-metalled horses, when they (the millers I mean particularly) beat the wheat-grower down to the lowest possible price for his wheat, and cause (partly) the baker to charge such a large price for the staff of life. Why, Mr Editor, bread is sold in Christchurch at from 3d to §d the 41b loaf, and I understand from good authority that a Timaru baker is sending bread to the Orari station, and delivering and selling if ip Greraldine for 4d the 41b loaf, and still we have to pay <3d the loaf. Some people think they are perfectly justified in extracting the very last farthing from their fellowmen in matters of business, my mind such ways of trade are wrong- I suppose Mr Jolly Miller at the present,

time is pocketing about £4t 10s profit on a ton of flour. Not so bad, eh ? In your wisdom, Mr Editor, please devise some scheme for the amelioration of this dreadful disease of greediness, and you will gain the good wishes of a large majority of the people of this district, and also of yours, sincerely,

Pro Bono Publico
