Major Gudgeon, who has been to Invercargill on a visit of inspection, left yesterday for Queenstown in company with the Hon T. H’ergns. Tbe Supreme Court opened at Nelson yesterday morning. There were only two cases, on® against a settler for stealing sheep and the ether for larceny. The Hokonui School, Southland, was destroyed by fire oil Tuesday night. Some of the school furniture, a number of postal letters and requisites, and the public library, containing 200 volumes, were saved from the burning building. A defective chimney is supposed to have been the cause, as the fire broke out in the roof.
