A LEGEND.
At the creating of Adam, runs a negro legend, Satan set about imitating the work, Hcd taking a quantity of pand succeeded quite in making a man. But as everything Satan touches becomes black, his man was naturally of that color. Seeiog this, Satan undertook to wash him white in tbe river Jordan, but the water flowed back as soon as he approached it, and tbtre waß nothing left but a very little water in the: bottom of tha stream, which just covered the bottom of the man's feet and the pains of the band, which explains why their hands and feet are sot as dark as the rest of their body. Furious at discovering that his attempt was in vain, Satan struck the poor creature a terrible blow upon the nose, which flattened it aut for ever. The unhappy man> amked for mercy, whereupon Hatan, realising that his con. ditioo was not bis own fault, and feeling a certain amount of pity for him, passed his vjband in a sort of caress over th« man's hftad, but tbe terrible heat of the i.an■« served tbe purpose of a curling iron, and " friaeled " the hair so that it remained woolly ever since.
