AUCTIONEERS' REPORT. GERALDINE. Messrs J, Mundell and Co. report sales for the week ending Saturday, 7th April, 1888, as follows At the Gernldine sale on Wednesday the entries of stock consisted of 3561 sheep, 371 head of cattle, and 63 pigs, ihe sales effected were in favor of vendors, especially in sheep. Prices realised during the sale wore—-sheep—2-tooth crossbreds, 5s 9d to 6s 8d ; 4-topth halfbred ewes, 5s 6d ; threequarterbred ewes, 4s; aged sheep, 2s to 2s 6d ; crossbred lambs, 4s 6d to 4s 8d ; merino ®wes, 2s to 2s Id, Cattle—Fat cows, £3 10s to £4; store cows, £1 to £llos ; 2-year-old steers and heifers, £2 ; jyearling steers and heifers, £1 6s to £1 7a 6d ; o lives, 9s to lls. Pigs—Strong Stores, 5s 6d, 6s to 7s ; small do. 4s 4d, TIMARU. Mr Moss Jonas renorls as follows Pleasant Point Sale— 0e held his usual monthly sale in these yards on the 3rd mst. Harvesting being over farmers accepted the opportunity to bring in their fat and surplus stock, consequently the yard accommodation was taxed to its utmost capacity. The sale was a very successful one so far as the clearance of lines went, but prices showed no improvement, although there was a large attendance of buyers. He sold 96 2-tooths mixed at 6s 3d, 106 at 6s 2d, 222 fat ewes and wethers at 5s lid, 100 2-tooths at 5s lOd, 243 fat at 7a Id, 43 lambs at 5s 3d, 134 ewes at ss, 50 lambs at 4s 9d ; 135 crossbred ewes at 4s, 24 at 3s, 139 cull lambs at 2a 3d, 7l merino wethers at la 9d, 572 ewes at Js 4d, and 57 at 10d, 4 rams at 15s, 3 at 17s, and 1 at 20a, I fat heifer £4 4s 6d, 3 do at £2 3a 6d, cow and calf £3 3s, 2 cows at £3 18a 6d, 8 yearlings at 21a, 3 calves at 12s, and 6 do at 7s, I sow £1 12a 6d, 1 at 30s, 5 at 23a 61, 1 at 225, and 20 pigs at 14s. Washdyke Yards—These yards have filled a little better of late. For his two last sales he reports the sale of 40 fat ewes ac 6a 6d, 183 lambs at 4s 9d, 108 lambs at 3a 9d, S steets at £4 15s, 4 at £4, 1 cow £2 7a 6d, 2 at £2, and 2 heifers at £1 ss, 5 pigs at 6s, and 13 at ss. Newmarket Yards.—There was a large entry in these yards at his last sale on Tuesday, 27th uit., and plenty of competition for every lot, the sale being a particularly good one for cat le. He sold 145 2-tooth wethers at 7s 3d, 64 fat ewes 4s 6d, and 163 at 4s, 70 at 3s 3d, and 210 at Is 9d, 2 rams at 10s, 4 fat cows £4 10s, 3 heifers £4 10s, 4 springers at £4, 6 heifers £3 7s 6d, 2 springers £3 ss, 12 steers £4, 2 heifers £2 sa, fat cow £3 15s, 1 steer £1 7s 6d, I old cow £1 10s, and 3 at 255, 2 yearlings 13s 6d, bull 12s 6d, 7 pigs at 255, 9 at 10s, and 5 at 6s 4d.
Sheepskins—For really good woolly skins there is plenty of demand, but poor lots are totally neglected. At his sale on the 4th inst he had a good catalogue and sold as follows Crossbreds 2s to 4>-, merinos Is 9J, and a special line of heavy skins Gs, lambs Is 2d, 2s, 2s Id, and 2s 6d, bag wool sd, s|d, and 6d, fat 4s to Bs, hides 2d to 3|d. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, April 5. The wool sales opened to-day; 9500 bales were catalogued; one-third from New South Wales ; one-third from New Zealand. There was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was keen. Merinos and crossbreds realised prices equal to closing rates of the February sales ; scoured and inferior a fraction cheaper. The number of bales available, including those reserved, was 340,000. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,500,000 quarters, and for the Continent 300,000 quarters. Sugar—German beet, 13s 9d. The stock of copper is 59,000 tons. Kauri gum is declining. Hides, 3|d. April 6. The quotations for wheat and flour are unchanged. New Zealand hemp is quoted at £27 Iss to £2B. At the wool sales 12,000 bales wore catalogued, for which there was a good demand. At the wool salss 32,000 bales have been catalogued, of which 15,000 were withdrawn. The bidding was spirited, and good sales were effected, but there was no quotable change in prices as compared with closing rates in February. Good sound merinos are unchanged, medium and inferior are £d lower ; good greasy sorts are very firm ; medium and inferior are unchanged ; fine crossbreds are firm, but the lower qualities are from par to id lower than in February, Wheat is quoted at 335. The following private telegram was received in Christchurch on Friday afternoon, dated London, April sth “The wheat market is dull and depressed. We can purchase Californian or Adelaide cargoes at 32s 61 per qr. for March shipment.”
