S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), W. B. Howell, J. Jackson, J. Talbot, M. Gray, R. A. Barker, Beys. G. Barclay, and T. J. Smythe. Mr Pearpoint sent an apology for non-attendance. The Chairman reported that since the last meeting the following: resignation! had been received :—Mr G. Greenfield, of Hunter; Miss G. Rowe, of Temnka ; Mr D. Brown, of Rangitata; to fill this raeancy as locum ttntm Mr r l. Anderson, pupil teacher, hud been appeinted. The Terauka Committee requested that the vacancy caused by Miss Rowe's retirement should be soon filled. The sum of £9 was now owing to the Winchester school building contractors. Mr Goldsmith was re-elected Chairman for the ensuing year.

The retrenchment motion recently passed was rescinded to admit of certain necessary modification?. The Rev. G. Barclay referred to certain printed questions issued by the Board relative to the chancer and experience of teacher.", and wii<i that, it had been stated that one of the question* had reference to the religions opinions of r-audidates fer the office of teacher. He wished it publicly notified that such was not the case. The following wre the only particulars sought concerning applicants for emp'ijroerit :—(1) Fud name and address j (2) age ; (3) condition, married or singly ; (4) classification ; (o) nature and place of present emp oyment; (6) how long held ; (7) nature and extent of previous experieica ; (8) name of training institute attended, *nd period of attendance ; (9) list of testimonials and certificates submitted, with date of each ; (10) list of subjeots which, if necessary, you would undertake to teach ; (11), approximate date on which you would be frse to commence duties.

A letter was read from the Department notifying that the building grant for the year would be £ILOO.—Mr Barclay moved, Mr Barker and it was carried : "That a Buildipg Committee be appointed to bring up recommendations as to the allocation of the building grant; such Committee to consist of Messrs Jacksoe, Gray, and the mover." The annual report of the Chairman to the Minister, the abstract of school accounts, and other documents, were laid on the table. From Albury, Wasbdyke, and Upper Otaio no returns had been received.—lt was generally agreed that Borne pressure would have to be brought to bear upon defaulting Committees. The following appointments were sane* tioned •—Mr J. E. Vernon, M.A., B.Sc, to the seoond mastership at Waimate; Mr D. W. M. Burn, M.A., to Hilton ; Mr W. Corbet to Fairview.

The selection of Miss Rowley as mistress of the side sobool, and Miss Bennett's appointment to the vacancy caused by Miss Rowley's transfer, were brought up. It was resolred that as the vacancy had not been advertised the ap. pointraent was irregular, and it was re* solved that applications should now be invited by advertisement. The Geraldine Commitfee wrote (1) complaining that the Committee had been ignored r# the Southern Cross Readers, (2) asking (a) that petitions from parents should ba submitted to the Committee, (b) that a gytrnasium might be supplied, and («) that a grant should be given for keeping small birds out of the school.— The application r« the gymnasium was granted, the Beard to supply half cost, which should not exceed £ls. A letter nas read from the Teachers' Institute, protesting against the action of the Board in reducing salaries abruptly, without notice, in the scheme of retrench* ment.—Mr Smytho hold that the teachers had a grievance, and after a short discussion Mr Barclay moved, Mr Barker seconded, and it was carried : "That in answer to the communication from the Educitionnl Institute rt reduction of salaries tlia Board siucerely regret it was obliged to do bo in consequence of the reduction l<y Government of the Board's funds from Det ember 31." Mr Jicksou reported on the ventilation, etc., needed in the Timaru School, and the Board sanctioned the expenditure of £3 needed, A grunt of £2 for a door was granted tp Hilton. The Ptireora School Committee asked for h grant of £7 in aid of repairs fund of £lB which it was proposed to spend. The Winchester Committee applied for payment of the cost of shingling.—Mr

Talbot: moved, Mr Barker seconded, sod it wae resolved : " That while desiring to encourage School Committees In raising local coMtrikutions in aid of effecting •nail repiira to school building*, etc., by supplementing such contributions, the Board must adhere to its resolution on this matter, viz., to refuse any. Bevision pupil teachers' salariesGirls : First year, £l7 ; second year, £22; third year, £27; fonrih year, £37- Boys : First year, £22; second year £27; tbird year, £32; fourth year, £42. Total reduction, £383. Fees for instruction of pupil teachers—For one in a school, ib; two or any additional number in one school, £4 (bonus in esse of passing, £llos in all caseß), £IOO. The services of the following teachers, who did not present themselves for examination, were ordered to be retained : -Miss Miller (Pleasant Valley), Mr Bannerman (Otaio), Mr Koskruge (Scotafcurn), Miss Ostler (Upper Waitobi Flat), Mrs Emmett (Hakateramea); A few ether matters of minor importance were dealt with, and the meeting terminated.
