ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
Auckland, March 31. The R.M.S. Alameda arrived from S«n Francisco at 4 o'clock this morning.
GENERAL SUMMARY. The Dtike of Leinster was appointed Irish Privy Councillor on Marsh 6th. Count Herbert Bismarck is betrothed to a relative of the Marquis of Londonderry, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Lord Herschell, at a dinner of the National Liberal Club, on March 7, predicted that the Conservatives before long would propose a Home Rule scheme representing probably more advanced ■ views than those of Mr Gladstone. Green’s cotton mill at Blackburn, containing 12,000 spindles, has been destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at 100,000. Advices received at London on March 2 state that the French schooner Fleur de laMer had foundered off the Island of Cay one, and sixty passengers were drowned. The sculling match at Lake Weir, Florida, on February 28Mi, between Teemar, Hamm, and McKay, resulted in favour of the first named. Teetner is now champion of America. The Paris Temps reports that Great Britain is negotiating with Turkey for the cesation to England of Saloniea island, commanding the Dardanelles, England guaranteeing to the Sultan possession of Stamboiil with the district about the Bosphorus, Dardanelles, and all his Asiatic provinces. The Amira'ty issued on February 28th to the commanders of the Home squadrons fall instructions regarding their positions for defence is the lime of war, including the mode of manning, victualling, and coaling their ships* and the method of communication. It is reported that the plan will be tried early in spring. The instructions apply to the squadrons at Portsmouth, Ho'yhead, Queenstown. Shee r nees, Hull, Leith, and the Clyde, The Channel Squadron has also received instructions, but its position is kept Moret.
The execution of the sentence of death pronounced by the State Court of Missouri on Maxwell (alias Brooks), the murderer ofßreller, has again been stayed, and a petition for reheating is now before the United States Supieme Couit. Mrs Langtry, the London actress, is now in New York, and is reported to be seriously ill from neuralgic heart disease. A Bill was introduced into Congress on February 20th, providing for the payment to the. Sereral Alfine villages were destroyed by an avalanche on February 29th, and many live* were lost. Two villages were (Covered; and thirty peraics perished. In the Valley of Mutietier, in Swi'ZTland, a great number of hojses weie oveiwhelmed, leu persons killed, and many cattle destroyed. Many villages near the Lake of Co mo suffered from want of food, Communication has been obstructed ■Troops were despatched to aid the sufferers, uud the soldi'rs cut their way through to relieve them. The Custom House near Sever ‘ village was entirely over- * whelmed. Three guards and four other persons were killed, A despatch from Rome, dated March 4th, says that over 200 bodies of victims of these disasters have" been recovered. The hospice of St. Bernard was buried on March 6th. There was no loss of life. A terrible cyclone visited Mount Vernon (Illinois) on February 19th, resulting in the killing of 30 persons, the wounding of 200 others, and the almost total destruction of the town, hires broke out in the ruins,'and many of the wounded were burned alive. Not less than 500,000 dollars' wor,th of property was destroyed by the cyclone and fire. Bom shops were jtirtad (amid the ruins, but the people, becoming disgusted at so many intoxicated nu n lying about the streets, compelled the owners to close them up. A father and son, farmers, near Fargo (Dacota), were eaten up by a pack of sixteen wolveo pn March 6ih, in sight of the wife and mother, who Were looking through the window of the farm house. The men had gone out with shovels to clear the snow from the haystacks, not more than fifteen or twenty rods distance, when they were attacked and devoured. Msiie Roze, the prima donna, wis presented at Liverpool, on March 2nd, with a necklace of diamonds as a birthday gift. Tfce ; Queen sent congratulations lo the dinger. During 1887 twenty torpedo boats were added, making n total cf 80 of the first class, and sixty-thres of the second class. During the coming year six first class, and ton second class torpedo boats will be ordered.

The Daily Union office, Springfield, Massachusetts, was burned on March 7. Several employees lost their lives, and many are missing. Mrs Farley, the society editor, was instantly killed by jumping from the window, and five compositors shared her fate from the same cause.

The Union Square Theatre, New York, with all the contents, was destroyed by fire on Feb, 28. The-damage amounts to one-third of a million dollars.

The mob was dispersed by the troops without bloodshed. The anniversary of the coronation of
the Pope was celebrated in Rome on March J, His Holiness received the congratulations of the Sacred College, and, in reply, commented more than ever on his position, which he said was unbearable. He declared that if the Italian Government did not prohibit public fdtes it was in its own interests, and not from any feeling with respect to the Holy See. A singular affair is reported from Sardinia. In tha presence of the authorities the members of two families, numbering 670 persons, who had been at enmity for, years, assembled in the parish church and took oaths to pardon all offences and live in peace and harmony.
