WOODBURY RACES.
Judge—Mr D. Denoon. Starter— Mr Corbett. Handicappers— Mr Corbett. Clerk of the Course— Mr J. Quaid. Clerk of the Scales— Mr J. H. Dean. Secretary and Treasurer—Mr J. 11. Dean. Stewards— Messrs Flatman, D. McDonald, Dean, A. Rae, Corbett, Jansen, Howard, and J. H. Dean, jun. The annual races under the auspices of this Club came off on the Education Reserve, Woodbury, yesterday. The weather was delightful, but the attendance was not so large as could be wished. Mr J. H. Dean, of the Woodbury Hotel, bad the general license booth, and appeared to do a' fair business. Messrs J. Cowie and Co., of Dunedin, had one of their totalisators on the ground. The course was iu a stubble paddock, and was very soft and heavy. Messrs Corbett and J. Quaid filled the positions of Starter and Clerk of the Beales respectively with credit to themselves. Mr Denoon’s decisions gave general satisfaction, while Mr J. H. Dean was a courteous and obliging Clerk of the Scales.
The following are the results Handicap Huddles, of 15 bot»; H miles, over six flights of hurdles. Open to all comers. Mr R. Crocker’s Malvina, 9st 12lb (Baumber) 1 Mr F. Bull’s Matagouri, Bst 71b (Griffin) was the only other horse that started and he refused every one of the hurdles the first time round. Coming to the straight he ran off the course. Malvina, therefore, won as he liked. •. ~ .
Maiden Plate, of 10 sovs; miles. For all horses that have never
won public money. . Weight for
age. Mr Crocker’s Milkman (Baumber) I: Mr F. Bull’s Matagouri (Griffin) "2 Mr Hoare’s Traitoreas (Flockton) 3 These were the only horses that started. Milkman took the lead aft the start and kept it all the way. Before entering the straight for the last time Traitoress ran off the course.
All-Aged Handicap District Eace, of 10 bovs; 1 mile. Mr E. Crocker’s Eapid Bay, Bst 111 b ... ... (Baumber) X. Mr J. Greaves’s Vineo, Sat 111 b (Griffin) 2f Sapid Bay jumped away with a., lead and kept it the whole time, winning easily. Totalisator dividend, 16a, Woodbury Cup Handicap, of 20 eovs (with a sweepstake of 20a each for acceptors) ;■ ' miles. The' amount of, sweepstake to go to second horse. Mr E. Crocker’s Malvina, Sst Tib (Baumber) 1 Mr E, Hunt’s Iroquis, Sst 51b
(Burgess) 2 Mr E, Crocker’s Nelly, 9at 21b (Flockton) & This proved to he a capital race, Little Wonder jumped away with the lead, Malvina being second, Iriquoi® third. This position they maintained! till coming into the straight the first time, when Malvina went to the \ front. Iriquois also began to forge t" ahead, and soon upon even terms with the leader. A grand raee took place between the two leading horses. Entering the straight for the- ? last time Iriquois was slightly leadings whips being out upon both him and. Malvina. A splendid finish took place.
Baumber, by sheer riding, landing Malvina a winner by the shortest of noses. Totalisator Dividend, £1 19s; seven on the winner.
Trotting Race, for entrance money
of los each; %% miles. Three horses started for this evert, which was won by J. Anglaud’s Kitty, ridden by her owner, the other two pulling up. Dividend, £1 4s. During the early part of the day this mare bolted with a small boy on her back, and galloped for about a mile and a*half before she could be pulled up, jumping two fences on the way. Tne boy, who stuck to the mare throughout, received' quite an ovation •n coming hack. Hueet Scxjbet, for entrance money of 10s 6d each; catch weights; 1 mile. Mr J. F. Werner's Little Wonder
(Maconochie) 1 Mr R. Crocker’s Orange Lightning (Ogden) 2
Coradie also ran. This was a splendid race between the two placed horses. Totalisator dividend, 19s.
Consolation Handicap, of 6 sovs; 1 mile. For all beaten horses at this meeting. Mr R. Crocker’s Nelly (Baumber) 1 Matagouri and Iroquis also ran. A. good race took place between Nelly and Iroquis. Totalisator dividend, £2. This ended the day’s sports about sizp.m.
