HE WANTED MORE APOSTLES.
All old Scotch merchant who had amassed a large fortune and desired to ornament his new viila with paintings came to an artist and gave him a commission <o paint a copy of “ The Last Supper.” The artist set to work and at ih" end of the agreed time brought the finished picture to his employer. This pleased the latter, hut in two days the artist was surprised to receive a visit from the merchant, who carried the huge picture on his shoulder. “Anything wrong with the picture, sir,” breathlessly asked the artist, inerting the merchant in the lobby and relieving him of his burden. “ Ay,” replied the merchant, “ the wife says that she disna ken what ye mean by Bellin’ 13 folk doon »t a table. De ye no’ ken that’s unlucky ? ” “ But, my dear sir.” remonstrated the painter, “ there, ictb only twe ve apostles.” “ Hoots I ” interrupted the merchant, “ I’ve kent that sin I was a wean, but, maybe they had a freen there. An’ at ony rate I’ll hae any number o’ apostles I like in my picture, sae stick anither ane or twa iniil it or gie me back my silier.”
