It will be necessary that some action should be taken similar to that carried out in Cork, Limerick, and elsewhere—a system of official branding in the colony. If the dairy farmer of New Zealand will support the Government in earrying a measure of this kind, we may rest assured that New Zealand first quality will compete with Danish or Brittany butter on even terms in London." Seeing the well-fed and well-dressed crowds that assemble on public occasions, thronging the streets and railway stations en holidays, the natural conolusien of a visitor would be that he was in the midst of a community where wan), was unknown. The utter absenoe of medioanoy, too, would confirm this belief. Yet, in spite of all these unmistakeable indications of well-being, as regards the great majority of the people, there are but too m»ny eases in whiob the struggle for existence is a hard and bitter ene —in which life has sush poor and sordid surroundings as to nsake it hardly worth living." A Hughs Antagonist. The whaling steamer Lizzie N., when about fifteen miles off the coast of Maine, saw a large loag whale of the finback species, and attempted its capture. A bout was lowered and manned by Captain West, his mate, and four seamen. Captain *Vest, took a heavy whale gun, in which was an explosive bomb laoce, while the mate steered. When the boat was near enough to warrant a shot Oaptain West fired, bat as the sea wan rough, the motion of the boat destroyed the accuracy,of the aim. The whale was badly wounded, but not in any vital pare. The whale then made for the boat, and in passing under it struck it with his flutes, throwing it some thirty feet into the air, with its crew. As the boat descended the whale again struck it with bis tail and completely demolished the boat and killed one of the crew, cutting him completely in two. The whale then commenced to bite, and strike with its tail at the pieces of the boat, killing two more men, wko were supporting themselves on pieces of the wreck. Captain West, the mate, ana the other man were taken aboard the eteamer, and another boat was lowered to capture the monster. Then the whalo attacked the steamer. By a quick movement of the rudder tbe steamer cleared hiiu by a few feet. This occurred a second time. By throwing over a larg« cask, ht which the whale, thinking it was the ship, kept bucking away, the captain was enabled to get a shoj; with the bomb lance, and fiaally the whale was killed.— Boston Transcript.
