Mr F. Wilding has been elected captain of the Canterbury eighteen who play against the English eleven on Tuesday. The sixth annual meeting of the Canterbury Frozen Meat and Dairy Produce Export Company was held at Christchuroh on Thursday. A dividend of 10 per cent, was declared, and £96 12s 3d carried to the credit of the profit and loss account.
At the Auckland Supreme Court on Friday, the petition of Catherine Lynch, praying for a dissolution of marriage with her husband Dennis Lynch, on the ground of cruelty and | adultery, was heard. The evidence showed that Lynch, who did not appear, had treated hia wife with extraordinary cruelty, and it was stated that for six years he had not bean for one week sober. A decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute in six months.
The Auckland Rugby Union held their annual meeting on Thursday evening. The report showed that the funds are in a satisfactory condition, there being a credit ba'ance of £269 lis Bd.
At a public meeting held at Kawakawa, resolutions were unanimously adopted in favor of a line which is necessfiiry to connect the Kamo and Kawakawa lines; it was further resolved to get up a petition in favor of the line, which it is believed will be largely signed all over the North. The services of the following officers in the Permanent Miiitin have been dispensed with:—Asdistant-Surgeon Oampbed,M ijors ScannH 1 and Gascoyue, Captains Cipsl and Buker.
A chimney sweep, named C. Gibbs, attempted to commit suicide at Dunedin on Thursday by taking spirits of salts. He drinks heavily at times, when he becomes very excitable. He is now believed to be out of danger, though he was uncoßscious for a time.
H.M.S. Nelson left Auckland for Sydney on Siturdiy. Admiral Fairfax was a prssenger. He goes to mpet H.M.S. Thalia, which arrived at Albany on Friday. The Petane Hotel, near Napier, was destroyed by fire on Thursday night, Nothiug\vaß saved. The proprietor and family and the boarders narrowly escaped with their lives. One boarder had to thro* himself out of an upper window, and was caught in a blanket. The insurances amount to £3OOO and all in the Union Office.
The body of Jobn Curie waa found on the town belt at Dunedin on Saturday morning. Deceased, v, bo bad been missing several days, was 66 year? old and a tinsmith. He leaves a second wife and a grown-up family. No marks of violence were fouud, and foul play is not suspected.
