The Casual Labor Board report that the ranks of the unemployed are decreasing. Nino months ago there were 5600 unemployed in Sydney, whilst now there are only between 1500 and 1600. The Lubeok brings news to the effect that H.M. Sandfly, which recently arrived at Tonga, passed Falcon Island, a recently (discovered volcanic island near the Tongan group, which was seen to bb exceedingly active and ejecting great quantities of ashes. The flames from the burning mountain were very brilliant at night and were seen for a great distance. March 20.
The Government Mine Inspector at Broken Hills writes that the stones recently found at Poolamacha are garnets, and not rubies. He states that no rubies have yet been found, although from the nature of ihe ground there may be some discovered. Two thousand acres of ground are already taken up, and propacting is actively proceeding. ; A jockey has been killed at Townsville races.
Arrived —Wairarapa. Threa men named Fenton, Knight, and Hearn, and a boy named Noble, went out sailing at Botany Bay on Sunday afternoon. The boat has since been found capsized, and it is feared that the occupants have all been drowned. Another boat with threa occupants was upset in the bay on the same day, but the occupants were rescued with some difficulty, as it was blowing very hard, Melbourne, March 20.
Government intend introducing a Customs Tariff Bill, and a vast number of suggestions for it have already been received. A new fort is to be constructed at the entrance to the harbor, the cost of which according to the Defence Minister, will be £150,000, but the departmental estimate for the work is fixed at £IOO,OOO more. The city contributions to tha Imperial Institute amount to £5397. Adelaide, March 20.
The shareholders in the Mount McDonnell Ruby Mines Company have approved the sale of the Company’s interests to a London syndicate.
