The British Navy is to be augmented by nine new protected vessels in addition to the Australian Squadron. When the Navy Estimates were under discussion in the House of Commons Lord George F. Hamilton, First Lord of (be Admiralty, said the British Navy when augmented by the additions f»r which the proposed expenditure was asked would be superior to the navy of any foreign Power. Crofters charged with rioting at Lewis, Hebrides Islands, b*ve been tried and acquitted, the Crown being unable to prove their identification.

Sir James F. Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, is urging upon the Imperial Government that a Sovereignty over the New Hebrides should be proclaimed. Lord Knutsford (Sir Henry Holland), Secretary of State for the Colonies, has replied that shortly an entire protectorate will bo proclaimed.
Sir F. D. Bell, the Agent-General for New Zealand, has received over fifty applications for the Chief Coramissionership of the Railway Board, which Parliament at the late session in New Zealand decided should take control of the New Zealand railways. The selection wdi be made shortly. Mr Pearson who brought homo thSouth Australian rubies, states that a powerful syndicate have offered to purchase the McDonnell Company’s ruby mines in Australia. The Company offer £200,000, one half of the amount to be paid in cash and the remainder in shares. The decision of the Company is awaited. In the final beat for the Waterloo Cup, Burnaby beat Duke Macpherson tod won the stake.
Tne Right Hon. Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Rxcboquer, will deliver his Budget speech on March 15th. It is expected that he will be able to show a surplus of over £3,000,000. A letter from tier Majesty tbe Queen to the sister of the late General Gordon, who fell at Khartoum, has been published. Her Majesty’s letter sympathises with the bereavement of the relatives, and deplores the loss of General Gordon to the nation. She further expresses the opinion that General Gordon’s cruel fate leaves a stain on the British arm?.
A motion proposing the appointment of a Committee to which should be referr (1 oil Scotch Bills, was rejected by a majority of 77, on the ground that to set up such a Committee would be to virtually grant Dome Rule to Scotland. Mr James Gilhooly, M.P. for Cork West, w»s to-day sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on a charge of inciting to riot, Notice of appeal was given. Mr Gi'hooly has been rearrested.
Mr Wilfrid Blunt has been released Tom Galway gaol.

It is reported that extensive frauds have been discovered in the Devonporl dockyard, which compromise all ranks of the employees. The detectives are now making a thorough investigation into the matter. It is not yet known whether the ordinary workmen are implicated in the frauds, but it is asserted that a number of officers and men on the permanent staff are mixed up in the dishonest practices wuic'i have been going on for a long time past, A number of copper workers hove already been arrested for fraudu'ent practices. It is alleged they have been in the habit of using Government material for private work, and that they performed this private work daring hours in which they should have been engaged on Government work.
The Queen will dine with the Prince of Wales on the occasion of his silver wedding on the 10th iast. Obituary—Amos M, Alcolt, philosopher, aged 89 years, and his daughter, Louisa M. An official bulletin issued as to the condition of H is Majesty the Emperor shows that be is suffering from throat affection, ond painful abdominal disorder, and also from a marked decline of strength. General Bronsart Yon Scbellendorff, Minister of War, has made « statement in the Reichstag, that there is no immediate danger of the Emperor’s death. The Duchess of Baden has been summoned to the palace. The medical officers in attendance on fciis Majesty have ordered that morphia shou d be largely injected in order to alleviate oil pain, The Reichstag will not dissolve until Saturday

that the condition of the Crown Prince is satisfactory except as regards I lie larynx, which has not improved under the latest treatment. Professor Walderaar, who has just concluded a miorccopic examination of the expectoration from the throat of the Crown Prince, differs with Professor Kansmae, the Strasburg specialist, and declares the expectoration to be free from any cancerous indication.
Mozambique, March 5.
Intelligence has reached here of a disastrous hurricane which has been experienced in Madagascar. '1 he gale was felt with extreme violence on the East. Coast of the Island and the town of Tamatave, which is the chief commercial port of Madagascar, was laid in ruins by the force of the wind. Eleven vessels were wrecked in the harbor or on adjacent reefs. The extent of the casualties is not jet known, but at I’amalavo twenty persons were killed bj the falling of debris , New York, M*rch 5.
Engine men on the lines as far ns this city have resolved to support the Chicago-Quincy strikes, and it is slated they will even go the leng'h oi stopping traffic throughout the country if their demands are not complied with, Washington, March 7.
An important treaty has just been signed by the Hon. T. Bayard, Secretary of State, on behalf of the United States, end Chang Yew Hoon, Minister of China, on behalf of bis Government, forbidding Chinese laborers in the United States.

The men who were arrested on a charge of being concerned in the second case of criminal assault committed on a woman were brought before the City Court to-day. The evidence proved that the woman was given to drunkenness, and was a bad character. It was also proved that the woman conld not identify those in custody, but the magistrate committed two of the prisoners for trial, and discharged the third. Sydney, March 7. Carroll, the man who murdered his wife on Saturday afternoon and then attempted suicide by cutting his throat, has died in the Hospital from injuries inflicted,

The police are taking step to prevent the prize fight which has been arranged between Burke and L. Fo'ey. The police also intend to make provi/ton that in future no fights to a finish will be allowed.
