RISING OF SLAVES AT RIO.
Prom Bio de Janiero information has been received of a great rising of slaves on the plantations in the, vicinity of St. Paulo, and their conflict with the troops and the police. The slaves on two plantations in the municipality struck work, and, seizing all the horses and mules they could find, made off with their wives and children. The ton policemen who were stationed at St. Paulo went in pursuit, but the negroes seized and disarmed them, afterwards stripping them naked and thrashing, them. As the slaves made for the forest their ranks became thicker, as they were joined by all the slaves on the plantations en route. Fifty policemen, well armed, were sent after the runaways, but after an exchange of shots, in which one man was killed, had to beat a rapid retreat. They returned to Amaro demoralised, and did not interfere with another band of slaves who marched through the town shouting “ Hurrah for freedom! We prefer death to recapture.” The planters were in great fear, and the troops were stated to bo unwilling to hunt the slaves.
