GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The adjourned monthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday evening . last. Present Messrs J. Mundell (Chairman), N. Dunlop, J. A. Quin, JV Williams, W. Berry, W. 8. Maslin, and R. Taylor. MINUTES, The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting, and of a special ineeting held on December 31st, were read and confirmed.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Outward correspondence was read and approved of; Inward was read and dealt with as follows

From the Department o£ 'Justice, Wellington, informing the Board that the Geraldine Town District was gazetted a Special Licensing District; also appointing Mr 0. £. Sherratt Clerk to the new Committee.—lt was decided that Mr C. E. Sherratt should act as Returning Officer for the election of a new Committee, and he was authorised to take the necessary steps to carry ouWihe election. From the Secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, informing the Board that the second moiety of £loloa, being the amount due by them, #as how 1 payable, and requesting a cheque 'for the same.—-Decided to pay the ambunt into the Bank.

From Mr Yalentime Millar, 0.8., Timaru, offering his services to the Board as consulting or working engineer.—Read.

From Mr J. C. Gavin, the Treasury, Wellington, informing the Board that no rates would be paid on Crown and Native lands after the. close of the present financial year. An application by Mr N. Dunlop, on behalf of the Presbyterian Church Committee .forj a culvert to be pui down opposite the ‘ new church: was granted.

CARRIAGE, DOG, AND OTHER HOEITSES.

The time for the renewal of these having arrived it was decided to enforce the payment of the same.

The Ranger’s report of the cattle found wandering upon the streets during the month was laid upon the table.

OVERSEER’S REPORT.

The Overseer’s report was read as follows

Silica last meeting all surface, man have been dismissed. Beyond finishing the work in hand at the last meeting no fresh work hss beep laid beyond one or two urgent matters, for which I have been compelled to employ a little labor. The Board should decide definitely the streets that tbe ranger can impound off,, as. there appears to be some misunderstanding with a number of ratepayers who are owners of horses and cattle—as, for instance, Forest Street, which is about two chains wide, all covered with self-laid English grass, where no. damage can bs done to the roads in any way, and other places similarly situated. The receipts for the month have been £1 Is 3d, which I still retain on account of the new year holidays. 0. E. Shzbbatjt, Overseer*

It was decided to make no distinction in the streets from which cattle should be impounded. ' ■ :

The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read, hut no action was necessary.

DOMAIN BOARD.

A meeting of the Domain Board was then held.

COBEESPONDBNCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :

From MrE. Mabin, Seeretarytothe Geraldine Lawn Tennis Club, asking permission to cut the grass on and roll the tennis court.—Granted, without prejudice to the right of the public to thejise of the ground.

THE lAEGE PAEK.

The Chairman stated that he audj Mr Taylor, who :had been authorised at the last meeting to interview the leasee of the park re signing the leased trimming the fences, etc., had seen Mr Walton on the matter. Mr Walton had signed tbe lease, and Jmd also agreed to carry out the conditions, of the same. The work had not beencommenced till a day or two ago, and was being done in a very half-hearted manner. No notice, however, had been taken of the Board's instruction

to plough back the racing track, and relay the same in grass. —It was unanimously decided: “ That the Chairman take a legal opinion as to the Board’s position in the matter, and be fully empowered by this Board to take all necessary steps to obtain compensation for the damage done and to prevent a recurrence of the same.” Mr Walton wrote stating that he had transferred his interest: in the park to Mr R. H. Pearpoint, and asked the Board to ratify , the transfer. —The Board decided that they could not grant the request, owing to certain conditions'in the lease not haying been carried out to their satisfaction. THU LATE riEE IN THE BUSH. The Clerk reported the action he had taken with regard to putting out the late fire in the bush. An account of £1 4s was passed for same. Members spoke very strongly about persons lighting fires in the bush, and it was unanimously resolved “That the Clerk should communicate with the police for the purpose of ascertaining the’names of the parties that caused the late fire in the Geraldine Bush with a view of bringing them to justice.’’

MISCELLANEOUS.

7 Mr Williams requested tbo use of the small park for the purpose of holding the Church of England picnic. —^Granted. It was decided that the Clerk write to the Cricket Club re the balance of £6 |due to, the Domain Board for fencing. This being all the business, the Board adjourned.
