TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Timarn Harbor Board was held yesterday. Acton (Chairman), Boss, Gray, Flatman, Teschemaker, Manchester, Morris, Wilson, and Jonas.. .
Mr Gibson sent in his resignation, which was accepted. Matters in connection with the Wai-iti tramway were dealt with, The clause inserted in the north wall contract *by the Chairman and Mr Boss indemnifying the contractors to the extent of £SOO was approved. An application from Mr I. J. Brad* ley fonpetmip non to erect two davits on the whan was referred to the Harbor mster. The Chairman stated that the Board had so far received £75 refunds on account of charges for the Priestman dredge. ' A letter from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand in reference to the Board’s loan was laid upon the table.
The Engineer was instructed to take immediate steps to erect a permanent Chance’s Dioptric Moorhead light at the end of the breakwater, to burn gas. The Engineer reported that Breakwater extension contract No. 6 had been completely finished, and the whole of. the protective work at the end of it had been laid with the exception of 3 blocks. Nearly the whole of the ironbark timber for the Slipway contract had. been delivered, and the contract should consequently be completed in a few weeks time. As directed by the Chairman he had considered the question of disposing of the spoil from Jhe wharf dredger, and recommended that it either be durapedihtp railway waggons for removal or into a portable “ bunker,” from which the dredger Taniwha could take it out to sea. He recommended thatas there was no further use for the crane “ Hercules ”it be sold. ; Some discussion ensued, several of the members holding that the silt when discharged over the south side oi the breakwater was again washed into the Harbor through the breakwater or around it. Ultimately the report was adopted. After discussing the Works Oommittteo’s report re dispensing with the services of the Clerk Of Works, tThich the Engineer advised, and reading long communications from the Engineer. jand Clerk of the Works, and discussing the same, it was re* solved—“ That the services of the Clerk of Works to this Board being required no further by reason of the completion of.,;the mole, the ordinary notice be given to the said Clerk that his services be dispensed with.” The Harbor Master reported the arrival of 17 steamers and 5 sailing •vessels, with an aggregate registered tonnage of 6568 tons, and the departure of 17 steamers and 5 sailing teasels of a total registed tonnage of 6883 tons, during the month of "December, 1887. Tbe arrival of the steamer Fifeshire on Thursday, 12th January, was a matter of great public importance, as it marked quite a new feature in the improved capabilities tod = security of our harbor. Perfect success, attended every detail connected with the mooring and speedy despatch of such a large steamer. Nothing was left undone on the part of the harbor staff to render the event free from the least possible hitch. . ■The Board expressed its great satisfaction with the arrangements ot the Engineer and Harbor Master for the accommodation of the Fifeshire. The tender of James Feeley and Co. for £46 for a shelter sled was accepted. Accounts were passed for payment, tod the Board adjourned.
