ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 11.

A dense fog which prevailed throughout the greater portion of the United Kingdom to-day seriously interfered with business, and several accidents and fatalities have been reported. The steamers plying between] Folkestone and Boulogne bad to cease running in consequence of the fog. The Rev. Mordaunt Lowtber, cousin of the Earl of Lonsdale, was summoned for a criminal ass&ult, but did not appear when called on. He was subsequently discovered in bis bedroom with bis brains blown out, Jan. 12.

Lord Geo, First Lord of the Admiralty, Teddington last night, promised thaT"tbe"Colonial Naval Defence Bill would be introduced next session.

Lord Salisbury, speaking at Liverpool, declared that Mr Gladstone was trying to prove that Home Rule was necessary, the result being that he was making Ireland uagovernabje, The assertion that the Cabinet really favored Home Bale for Ireland was without foundation, The greatest cruelty of which England had been guilty towards Ireland was the vacillating policy of successive Governments. In the course of the same speech the Premier admitted that the fiscal system required amendment, but denied the necessity of proj tectien. Cheapness was sometimes secured to communities at ultimate expense, in proof of which he instanced onjust railway freights and operations ef gambling limited liability companies, His Lordship also stated that the prospect of the Conservative party had greatly improved of late. The Marquis of Salisbury, in the course of a speech, said Government would be resolute in their endeavors to disperse the existing depression both in Great Britain and Itoland, and be hoped that the dawn of a new season of prosperity was near. Gigantic armies had now been raised, and the uncertain national feelings which prevailed ware a source of great danger in Europe, although the position of Continental affairs presented rather a brighter outlook at present than had been the case recently. He felt justified in hoping for the future prosperity of the country. He deplored the war between Italy and Abyssinia, but wished the Italians success in their efforts.

Morgan states that the first parcel of stone taken from bis find near Dolgelly on examination yielded 30 per cent of gold. Despite the opposition of the Victorian Football Association, it is Lillywhite’s intention to bring out a team of English footballers, and will play club matches there if unable to arrange for a combined team. The team will visit New Zealand at the commencement of the winter, and will pay another visit to that colony towards the end of the winter months. Lillywhite and Shrewsbury will not accompany the teams to New Zealand, and they both eomplain that the terms offered by the [cricketers and footballers are not sufficient to make a trip a remunerative one. Later The Marqnis of Salisbury in the course of a speech said that there were undoubted signs that the depression in trade is gradually disappearing. This, he thought, would tend to remove the Irish difficulty. Next session, however, would be a difficult and hazardous one, and Government would have to depend on the assistance of the Unionists in framing their measures. Mr Sexton, M.P. is now recovering. Five days’ darkness has been experienced in Birmingham, and mncb excitement was caused, as it was thought the world had come to an end. Some of the local people had prophesied that the world would come to an end on the I4tb.

The dense fog which had been experienced for the past few days is now lifting, except in the Midlands, where it is as black as night. Many casualties have occurred. Glasgow, Jan, 13. The police hare discovered a plot to destroy the public buildings of Cork by means of dynamite. Durban, Jan. 10.

News has reached here that fighting is imminent between the Zulu chiefs Dinizulu and Usibepu, who were the cause of the recent disturbances in Zuluhnd. A force of Dragoons has been ordered (o proceed from here to the seat of trouble, Sistova, Jan. 11. The Danube is alarmingly flooded, caused by the sudden thawing of ice.

The Judge who heard the charges preferred against M. Wilson has been degraded for infair conduct in trying to entrap the accused, Mabsowah, Jan. 12,

Thirty thousand Italian troops are now stationed in this city. The Negus who opposes the Italians is in command of sixty thousand followers.

An encounter between the followers of Ras Aloula and the Italian troops is now daily expected. The offence for which Judge Yigneau, who board the charges against M. Wilson, was dismissed from office was inviting witnesses for the prosecution to dine with him.

Melbourne, Jan. 13.

A French dramatic company is to be imported to perform during the Exhibition. The cost of bridging them has already been defrayed by subscriptions. The Australasian gives the gross yield of wheat at an average of 12.9 bushels per acre, and the Leader at 12.8 per acre,

Jan. 14. £500,000 worth of silver stocks changed hands yesterday.

Two hundred riflemen of the various volunteer corps will go to Sydney to take part in the rifle matches during the Centennial week. Sydney. Jan. 13.

Mr Allen, who was elected for Paddington, though a protectionist, was disavowed by the Protectionist Union. The revenue derived by Government from the Barrier mines last year was £140,000. The revenue from the same source is expected to exceed one million this year. The fervid speculation in the silver shares still continues. It is expected to last some time more, especially with respect to the Broken Hill Central mine shares, where it is understood that the rich lode originally found in the Broken Hill mine has been struck, One hundred thousand pounds worth of business was done here yesterday, and at Melbourne the business is said to be ±.350,000 a day, one broker having earned £IBOO by commission in one day.

Jan. 14.

It is understood that the proposals to change the name of the colony and project the erection of a State House hare been abandoned, The musical festival in connection with the Centennial celebration has also been eliminated from the programme. Historical documents regarding the deposition of Governor Bligh in 1808 have been presented to the colony by the daughter-in-law of Major Johnstone, a leading spirit in the deposition of the Governor, and who personally effected the arrest. £IOOO was previously refused for the documents.

Eight hundred and sixty men are gathering rabies over a large area of country in the vicinity of Alice Springs. Many others are working on good gold. Brisbane, Jan. 14.

Mr Butter, Mayor of Bockhampton, who was arrested for forgery has been committed for trial. The total amount proved to be £9,500, Mr Joseph Levy, who has just arrived from Paris, has been fined £4OO for landing precious stones at Thursday Island, on which the duty bad not been paid.
