A BEAUTY COMPETITION.

A grand Charitable fete wasprecently given in Buda-Pesth in aid of the sufferers from the great fires and inundations which have wrought such widespread disaster in many of the Hungarian towns. The organising committee consisted of Count Stephen .Karolyi (president), Herr Ludwig von Cosavolozky (member of the Diet, and editor of the Egyetertes), and Herr Maurus von Jokai (member of the Diet, and editor of the Memzet). Among the events were prizes consisting of golden apples for the three most beautiful women. The first prize was awared to Praulein Gisella Schuler, who is 18 years of age; the fete, curiously enough having taken place on her birthday. The golden apple, inscribed “ To the All Beautiful, September 20th, 1887,” was presented to her by Count Karolyi. The second and third prizes were apples similar to that just described, and were awarded to Pz’aulein Ida Toronyi and Praulein Mariska Kolos. These two ladies are natives of Buda-Pesth; while Miss Schuler is a native of Oroskaza. The apples were hung round the winners’ throats as lockets. The fete, altogether, was a great success. More than 100,000 visitors were present, some of whom had travelled very long distances. The amount realised for the charitable purpose for which the fete was held was 60,000 florins (about £6000).
