A STRANGE DINNER PARTY.
A writer to an American paper Bays “A singular coincidence came under my notice recently. A Eliasian army officer invited six gentlemen to, dinner; Without mentioning their 1 names I will state their occupations. , Mine host was a general in the Russian army, iay next neighbour wasa Turkish official, the gentleman opposite was in f the English consular service, and the fpn liftman on his right was a young rench officer. The seat at the end of the table was occupied by a distinf aished Irishman, who is famous for is knowledge of the ancient and modern languages. The writer was -connected with the United States con* , Bular service. Tb.e conversation was chiefly in French, as all present spoke ■ that language. Neither the Turk nor the French officer spoke English. European politics were discussed, and -the conversation turned to the Irish question. The French said that he had always taken agreat interest in Irish affairs because his grandfather was an Irishman. The Turk then made the announcement that his , f grandfather was also from the Emerald Isle. The Englishman’s mother was a ■ County Waterford lady. The American’s father and mother were born in Tipperary, and the Russians grandmother came from Wicklow. This dinner was given in a town m ancient Circassia.”
