CAREER OF A BANK SWINDLER.
Sidney, Jan. 2. A man has been arrested at Queenheyan on a charge of forgery committed in that town, and turns out to be identical with a man who in April, 1886, committed several Bank swindles, among others the altering of a cheque for £l2 to £I2OO after it had been initialled by the ledger-keeper. The man, whose real name is Ebenezer Dirsett, admits the fraud, and states that when in Melbourne shortly after ' the swindle he became alarmed, and thinking that the numbers of the notes paid to him by the teller might be known, ho enclosed twenty £2O notes to the managers of the Bank, and, with the balance of the money in gold, took the Erench mail steamer to Marseilles and went on to Paris, He was there shadowed by several detectives, and eventually thought it was best to return to the colonies, and did so by way of England. £le travelled through thepastoral districts disguised as a swagsmaxi, committed other swindles, and evaded arrest until reaching Queenbeyan.
