ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 5. Sir Charles Dilke denies that it is his intention to re-enter politics at present. He says he hopes to completely vindicate his honor in a conrt of law.

An alarm of fire was raised in the Edinburgh Theatre last night, and a panic ensued. Many persons were crushed and injured in the blocked exits, The eleven pfjt member to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Colonel Tottenham, M.P. for Winchester, resulted in the return of Mr Richard Moss (Unionist) by a majority of 535 votes over Mr P. Vanderbyl, the Liberal candidate.
A Blue Book issued shows that America is the chief obstacle to tbe international prohibition of the sale of arms and alcohol to Pacific natives. The Standard in an article on the New Hebrides question, strongly demands the evacuation of the group by France, and contends that amess this is done immediately the colonies will be justified in having misgivings as to the reliability of the Anglo-French Convention on the subject, The Army and Navy; Stores have arranged to import fortnightly 100 cases of Victorian apples and pears. Mr Edward Stanhope states that the Government are methodically carrying out the recommendnlions made by the Imperial Defences Commission, and that before the end of the year all important stations will be thoroughly defended.

The Standard to-day states that M. Paul Deroulede, Chairman of the French Patriotic League, forwarded the forged Bulgarian despatches to the Czar.
The Press speak in high terms of the report of the New South Wales Drink Commission, but lament the disclosures made by it. Mr M. Gibson, Q.C., Solictor-General of the High Court of Justice, Ireland, has been promoted to a judgeship. Mr William O’Brien, of the Queen’s Bench Division, has bean appointed Attorney-General, and Mr Dodgson H. Madden, Q.C., of Ireland, succeeds Mr Gibson as Solicitor-General. The sentence passed on Mr Blunt, of two months’ imprisonment, for taking part in the proclaimed Home Rule meeting at Weodford, was appealed against but the decision has been upheld, and Mr Blunt has been removed to the gaol in Galway.

Her Majesty the Queen will shortly make a visit to Florence and San Remo, It is announced that the conclusion arrived at between England and Prance respecting the New Hebrides Convention pledges that France will allow British subjects equal commercial privileges. Franco at the same time guarantees that no convicts will be sent to the Leeward Islands.
M. Persico, the Papal delegate to Ireand, denies that he intrigued to coerce :he priests in the direction of moderation.
Sir Henry Parkes has agreed to abandon his opposition to the proposals for parcels by post, but he refuses to exempt the mail steamers from light dues. The contract will now be signed forthwith.
It is reported that Mr Gladstone has had an audience with tbe Pope. Mr Herbert Gladstone intended addressing a meeting ot Dromore in County Down, Ireland, but the district had been proclaimed, and o body of trosps bad been sent there to prevent any disturbance. Rome, Jan, 5.
A grand Papal mass was celebrated at St. Peter’s to-day, and 20,000 pilgrims who were present made repeated cries of “ Long live the Pope end King,” Buenos Ayres, Jan, 5.
The Argentine Republic bare abolished export duties to the amount of 2,000,000d0l on wool and other produce. New York, Jan. 5.
A Bill for promoting a Customs Union with Canada has been introduced into Congress. Jan, 7.
Mr Joseph Chamberlain, M.P., Chief British Commissioner for the Canadian Fisheries Arbitration, has induced Canada to drop the demand for a reciprocal trade wi<h the United States. The commission will probably recommend that the fishery rights in Canadian waters should be referred to arbitration’ Paris, Jan. 5.
S veta! failures have occurred here consequent on over speculation in copper. The liabilities amount to thirty millions.
Instead of winning several seats in the Senatorial elections the Republicans have lost four to the Conservatives. French diplomatists are urging that the troops should remain in the New Hebrides until Egypt has beea evacuated by the British, J«n. 7. In consequence of the disclosures which have been made, it is intended to prosecute M. Wilson, the sou-in-law of M. Grfvy, the ex-Prcsident. Capetown, Jan. 4. Mr Murray, a member of the staff of the Cape Times, has travelled from Johannesburg to Swaziland in twentyfour days, the quickest on record. He reports that the quartz reefs recently discovered there are very rich, in many cases yielding lOoz to the ton, and never less than loz. The reefs are practically inexhaustible, Rio de Janeiro, Jan. 5. R.M.S. Ruapehu left to-day for Plymouth, all well, Berlin, Jan. 7. The physicians, who have been in attendance on the Crown Prince, are screed that the affection from which the Prince suffers is laryngitis and not cancer. Madrid, Jan. 7. The Government in inviting the Powers to confer with reference to affairs in Morocco.

Mr D. Gillies, the Premier, is declining in heolth. Complaints are being received from most of the country districts of the ravages made by caterpillars and locusts, and it is expected that the cropo will be seriously damaged by these pests, Sydney, Jan. 6. The City Corporation propose' to light the parks and squares in Sydney, ia order to assist in the repression of larrihinism. The fire which broke out on the harquo Helen, lately arrived at Newcastle from New Zealand, destroyed the forepart of the vessel, and tbe amount estimated for repairs is £SOO. Arrived —U.B.S. Company’s Waihora from Auckland, Adelaide, Jan. /. Tko Jubilee Exhibition closes to-d«y. The attendance during the time it has been ojen amounts to 753,000, and the receipts to £21,000, which is £SOOO beyond the amount estimated to b« taken. The following are the number of awards made : South Australia, 1015 ; Greet Britain, 995 ; Victoria, 516; Nee Sooth Wales, 427; Belgium, 159. Owing to the great success ot the exhibition it is not expected that the guarantors will be called on. The barque Raturn, while lying in the Boy to-day, was burnt, and the cargo, consisting of 5000 bags ot wheat
