SUPREME COURTS.
Dunedin, Jan. 4. Eliza Whittet was sentenced to two years, to commence at end of the sentence she is already serving, for larceny. Edward Arthur, charged with robbing a Chinaman with violence, was acquitted. Jan. 5. James Johnston, alias Lavery, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery, and was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Joseph Spiers, charged with larceny, was acquitted. James Philpot, for deserting his wife and child, was placed under probation for six months, His Honor stating that prisoner should be at liberty to earn money. The case of Henry Davidson, charged with attempting to levy blackmail by sending a letter demanding money with menaces was then taken. The jury unanimously returned a verdict that prisoner was guilty of a practical joke, and in reply to questions said this meant that there was no criminal intent. ■Wellington, Jan. 6. Thomas Connolly, for horso stealing, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
