ACCIDENTS, SUDDEN DEATHS, ETC.
A young fellow named Kenneth Wright was driving a mowing machine at the Upper Hunter, near Makikihi, on Saturday evening, when one of the reins broke, nnd the horses became unmanageable. While trying to control them Wright was dragged from bis seat and fell in front of the knives, sustaining injuries of so aevoro a nature that one of bis legs bad to be amputated six inches below the knee. Tbe body of G. M. Armstrong, one of tlie men drowned by tha capsizing of the Truant on Boxing Day, Las been recovered floating off Tiritiri. Wellington, Jan. 3. The death is announced of the wellknown solicitor’s wife, Mrs Travers, of Wellington. Some time since she underwent an operation, and gradually sinking, died yesterday at the age of 67. A man named Warner, who had recently arrived in Wellington, waa drowned yesterday while bathing in the Hutt river. Masterton, Jan. 4. Herbert France, a Wellington youth, dived head foremost into the Waipora river this morning, and failed to rise. Several little boys, with great difficulty, pulled him out in an insensible condition. Thomas Howie, • well known farmer of South Tpkomairiro, has died frem injuries received a week ago from an Ayrshire boll he was taking from the show grounds. Ikvergabqill, Jan 3. A bey named Spencer was killed on the Bluff railway line yesterday* Bis bat blaw off, and it ie said that at the instigation of his companions he leaped from the train to recover it, breaking his neck. Christchurch, Jan. 3. This afternoon an inquest’ was held at Addington gaol on the body of a woman named Annie Beuchler, who was committed to gaol for medical treatment for drunkenness, aud died last night. The medical evidence showed that death had resulted from fatty degeneration of the heart. A verdict to that effect was returned. Fire jurymen agreed to a rider expressing the opinion that Addington Haol is not a proper place for dipsomaniac patients.
