Hawkins manager of Tne Bank of N.S.W., Geraldine, lately caught a very large speOimen of the trapdoor spider. When extended, the insect measured four inches in diameter, and is well worth seeing. Mr Hawkins intends to send it to the Christchurch museum.

Maxwell; saddlsr, Timaru, has disposed of his business at Winchester to Mr T. G. Oleghorne. Mr Oleghorne announces that the business will still remain under the management of Mr A. Baiilie, and hopes to receive a continuance of the public support. He is prepared to do all work and sell goods at Timaru prices, aad to line collars and saddles with Maxwell’s patent spring pads at Timaru rates. 1.0.0. F. Victoeia Lodge, No, 19., Geraldine,— The usual monthly meeting of this Lodge was held on Friday evening, last. The Lodge was opened in due form by the N.Q-., Bro. J. Williams. One candidate being in attendance was duly initiated a member of the Lodge. The following officers, were elected for the ensuing term N.G., Bro. J. Williams (re-eleoted) j V.G., Bro. H. Hardy ; Treasurer, Bro. T. Bdwket. Th 6 office of Secretary was left over until next meeting. AfMr routine business the Lodge was closed in the usual form by the N.G. at 9.30 p.m. Roman Catholic Church.— The Rev. Father Giuaty, the parish priest of Christchurch, arrived on a visit toTemuka on Saturday. The rev. gentle- ! man preached an appropriate sermon for the occasion on Sunday last at half-past' 10 Mass, at which there was a very large congregation present. Ha also preached at Yespers, taking for his text “All power is given unto Me in heaven and on earth; go ye, therefore, teach all nations.” Both sermons were most instructive, and were dealt with in a masterly manner by the preacher.

A' VICTOET FOE THE TeOXXERS.—At Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon Frederick Wood, the cycling champion, rode a ten mile match against Mr J. Keith’s trotting horses tWait-a-whilo and Malvina in •addle for £25. Nearly 2000 people were present. The race proved a hollow Victory for the horses. Keith rode, his weight being lOit. Wait-a-while was first on the track, and gained on Wood from the start. The hotae ; had done five mile* when Wood had covered four. Keith then changed to Malvina, arid gained one lap (a third of a mile) before the finish, thus winning by 1$ miles. Time—2Bmin 33sec. The betting was slightly in favor of the horses.

Spoeiinq.—At Tattersall’s meeting at Sydney the Carington' Stakes of ‘ 10bp sovs. (700 sots going to the first horse, 200 to the second, and 100 to the third) was won by Acme, My Lord second, and The Queen third ; Lady Oarington’s Prize of 10 sovs., with 500 soys, added (for two-year-olds), was won by Lady Betty, Consequence second, and Mies Thirza third.—At Melbourne the New Year’s Meeting commenced on Saturday. The Normanby Stakes of 10 sovs, with 400 sovs added (for two-year-olds), was won by Gladstone, Lonsdale second, and Aoroste third ; the Standard Handicap, of 5 sovs., with 300 sovs. added, by Mozart, Harvester second, and Casuist third; and the Bagot Handicap of 10 sovs. with 1000 sovs. added, by Oakleigh, Affluence second, and Dunlop third, AnguNq.—After an unusually bad season •wing to wet weather, angling is beginning to look up in the Terouka district. On last Thursday evening Messrs Gillies and Pefgusson, of Dunedin, accompanied by Mr N. O. Nicholas of Temuka, succeeded in landing a splendid basket oMB fish ranging from 31b to 81bs and weighing in all 691bs. These fish were taken with the Devon and whitebait phantom minnows at the Opihi river. Oa Friday evening the same party landed 15 flish weighing 431 b, the heaviest being over Blbs. Owing to a heaVy dew and a very bright fall; moon the night was not suitable for fishing. The rivers are now falling, owing to the dry weather, and as the fish are coming in large numbers from the sea heavy baskets may be looked for. The rivers are now in good order and teeming.with fish, and the balance of the season ought'to be good. •
