FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
, A serious fi re broke out at Lambton Quay.rjW'.eilingtoii, . at half past three o’clock on Sunday morning, in a double shop/,;:occupied by Mr Carpenter, fruiterer, and Messrs Bullock Bros’, fancy repository. The fire was first discovered in the last named store, and it spread with great rapidity through the building, so that in a very; few minutes the shop was enveloped in flames. The City Buffet Hotel,'which adjoined Messrs Bullock’s on the northern side, was soon a mass of flame, and the,proprietors, Messrs Orr and Sons, together with the lodgers, who numbered over seventy, had but little time in' which to' escape, the majority saving only a few articles of wearing apparel. Fortunately all were rescued. Within a few minutes of the alarm being rung, the fire brigade arrived up the scene, and spop mastered the conflagration. The building occupied by 'Messrs 5 33»iillock Biros, and Mr Carpenter was insured; for iglsoo ip tl|e Cqlonial office; Messrs Bullock’s stock for £IOOO in the London, Liverpool and Grlobe Mr
Carpenter’s stock for £2OO in the Phoenix. The City Buffet Hotel and the stock and furniture were insured for £3BOO in the London, Liverpool and Globe. A building on the south of Mr Carpenter’s was occupied downstairs by Messrs Nelson, Moate and Company, tea merchants, and upstairs I.y Messrs Davenport, Caskie, and ] )avenport, clothing manufacturers. It was insured in the New Zealand office .. for „£JLQQQ.,._MeMW Moate and Company’s tea wasinsured in the Phoenix for £3OO, and in the London, Liyerpooland Globe for £7OO. The stdeksrtQwever, are only slightly damaged. MessruDavenphit and Company had most of the material in their department ; destroyed,i are insured in the Phoenix for £SOO. Mr Holliday's stationer’s shop; had a quantity of ; material destroyed by water forcing its way through the.roor, and Mrs Richardson, who has a dress- , making establishment - in* the* upper portion of the building, is a r ’Sufferer, but not to a large extent., Thebrigin of the fire is unknown! Mr Gardner’s ironmongery ;stock, ,next to the City Buffet, was slightly damaged f>y ,w;ater. The premises destroyed (belong bo the estate of the late Dr Evans..!'
