FIRE AT WELLINGTON.

, A serious fi re broke out at Lambton Quay.rjW'.eilingtoii, . at half past three o’clock on Sunday morning, in a double shop/,;:occupied by Mr Carpenter, fruiterer, and Messrs Bullock Bros’, fancy repository. The fire was first discovered in the last named store, and it spread with great rapidity through the building, so that in a very; few minutes the shop was enveloped in flames. The City Buffet Hotel,'which adjoined Messrs Bullock’s on the northern side, was soon a mass of flame, and the,proprietors, Messrs Orr and Sons, together with the lodgers, who numbered over seventy, had but little time in' which to' escape, the majority saving only a few articles of wearing apparel. Fortunately all were rescued. Within a few minutes of the alarm being rung, the fire brigade arrived up the scene, and spop mastered the conflagration. A building on the south of Mr Carpenter’s was occupied downstairs by Messrs Nelson, Moate and Company, tea merchants, and upstairs I.y Messrs Davenport, Caskie, and ] )avenport, clothing manufacturers.
