Uriah James Williams, a farm laborer at Taitai, was committed for trial at Wellington for a criminal assault on a child of tender years. A man named Murdoch Young, employed on a lighter at Napier was missed on Tuesday night. He was seen last at ten o'clock, leaving the Railway Hotel. He was the worse for liquor. Hia body was recovered on Wednesday in the inner harbor. The house of Mrs Mary O'Connell, Franklin Road, Auckland, was discovered to to be on fire last night. The Annies were surpassed by the neighbors, who found the doors and windows all securely fastened. Two separate fires had been started with rubbish saturated with kerosene, and the furniture had all been removed. Mrs O'Connell was near the house when tha fire wua first observed, but weßt away refusing to give the key. She was arrested lalter in the evening, when she declined to give any information as to the insurances, She said somebody must have stolen her furniture, and set fire to her house. Serious robberies have been reported to the police to have taken place on Wednesday night in the Auckland harbor. The yachts Rita and were looted, and a quantity of Bilver plate stok:". from the latter, whilst the yacht Malua is missiiig, and is believed to have been ta«n by the robbers. A party has gone out to search for the vessel. It is expected that there will be a meeting of the Cabinet early in January, and that the retrenchment scheme will be dealt with.
