r.The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday 1 evening. ■ Present—Messrs H; M. Miles (Chairman), Gk Lynch, E. Brown, J. Davis, W. G-. Rutland, A. Russell, and A. W. Surridge, ” , . ' MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read, and approved. . Inward was read as follows: . From the Board of Education, forwarding, £1 grant in aid of repairs. From the same, stating that the amual scholarship examioation .would commence in Tiraaru on January 4th. From the Hon. W. Rolleston,stating that he should have much pleasure in complying with the request of the Committee that he should distribute the prises on Friday, Dec. 23rd.J From the Manager of the "N.Z. Bible and Book Society (two letters), in reference to the prises purchased from the Society

MASTER’S REPORT.

The Head Master’s report, dated the 20th December, was a* follows

Sir, —I have the honor .to submit the. following report for the month of November, and for the three past weeks of December; Norsm* bor,— Average roll,; Boys 192.6, girls 175.7, total 368.2 ; strict average : boys 137.4, girls 137, total. .264.6; working average : boys 148.1, girls 127.5 total 285.7; highest attendance; Iwye 169, girls 157, total 326, December up 16 15th—Average roll: boys 193,’girls 171, total 364 ; strict average; boys 147.4, girls 126.7, total 274.1; working average; boys 147.4; girls 126.7, -total 274.1 ; hightest attendance: boys. 157, girls 143, total 299.- In addition to the special prizes, of which you are already aware, . lam gratified to be able to state that A. E. G. Rhodes, -Esq., M.H.R., has kindly sent £3. to be spent in books, and to be divided equally between the winner* , of dux and senior mathematic prizes. Mr was appointed visitor for ttm next two' v months. THE LATE CONCERT. . The Secretary, presented, a report showing the result of the recent concert held in aid of the prize fund. The gross receipts amounted to £l2 16s 9d, and the expenses to £4 6s 6d, leaving a net balance, of £8 10s3d. It was stated that slightly ovs» the amount netted had been, expended in prises, but it would not exceed £l. The result of the concert was deemed most satisfactory. , the prizes. - The Chairman made an explanation " as to the rule on which the prizes'' were awarded, ‘and in the course of a • general conversation Messrs Lynch; ; and Rutland expressed the opinion'’ that too much money was expended on the prizes of the upper Standards. A long conversation, then ensued on the prizes, special and ordinary, but no resolution was; proposed. A COMPLAINT. Mr Surridge brought, up a complaint he had referred to previously v in reference to certain punishment . alleged to have been inflicted on some of the school children,‘which he dis* . approved of.—lt was pointed but that. some months had elapsed. since Mr . Surridge bad first' mentioned matter, and the punishment hadj| not been repeated since, ' but finally it was arranged that the Chairman and Mr Surridge 'should , visit the school and make enquiries. INSVECTOR'S REPORT, In reply to a question, the Chairman stated that the Inspector’s report had not yet been received. V ACCOUNTS. An account of £1 8s was passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
