The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1887. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Qbbamine Public School.—Mr J. Gibson Gow, the Board’s Inspector, has been engaged daring the past two days in conducting the annual examination of the above school.

Anniversary Day.— To-morrow being the anniversary of the Province of Canterbury will be observed as a general holiday. Several large picnics in connection with the various Churches have been arranged. Gbbaldine Rifles. —lnspection parades of this Company during December will be held this evening, and on the 220 d and 29tb, at 7.30 p.m. To-morrow there will be classfiring at 10 a.m., and it will bs continued •very Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 6.30 o.m. Proposed Pension. The Auckland Financial Reform Association telegraphed to Mr Goldie, asking him to enquire what claim Mr Baddeley, R.M., has for his proposed pension, Mr Goldie has replied that be is a member of a special committee deputed to consider the matter. Eniebtainhbnt at Temuka.— The annual entertainment by the children attending the school conducted by the Sisters of St. Joseph at Temuka takes place in the Volunteer Hall to-morrow evening. A splendid programme has been arranged, and should the weather prove fine the. entertainment will doubtless be a great success. Supreme Court.— At the Supreme Court, Timaru, yeelsrday, before Hie Honor Mr Justice Williams, Edwin Cook and J. Weaver were charged with an uanatural offence at Geraldine. Cook was found guilty of an attempt, and sentenced to two years’ hard labor. This was the only ease, and at its conclusion the Court rose and the Judge left for Dunedin.

Temuka Daisy Faotoby.— A special meeting of the directors of the Temuka Dairy Company was held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs Brown (Chairman), Mason, Austin, Hayes, Gray, Soott, Quinn, and Cain. The resolution paised on the 12th October, 1885 —“ That single oheeie should not be sold at the factory,”—was rescinded, and it woe decided to supply shareholders for oesh only at 6d per lb for large oheeie, and fid per lb for email cheeie. Tha wholesale prise at the factory, exclusive of packing, was fixed at 4sd per lb for l»rge cheese, end Kid per lb for •mall chosse for quantities of not less than 6o wt. The chairman staled that space had been engaged in the Doric for three tone. This would be forwarded, as well as the six tons by the Kaikoura if the oheesa was Biiffiejeptly matured in time. It being necessary to provide payment for the very large quantity of pailk coming into the factory, it was agreed to iusrejyip the personal guarantee of the directors to tbl' D £ to £2OOO,

Train Arrangements.— To-morrow morning’s train from Timaru to Christchurch passes through considerably earlier than usual, and Saturday return tickets from any station to any station, available till the 19th for return, will bo issued during to-day and to-morrow. Excursion tickets to Christ* i church, available for return till the 19th, will bo issued at Temuka per the first train to-morrow—at 18»!first class and 13s second class, and goods traffic will be suspended on that'day. The Exhibition of thb West.— General Mite, the Circassian youth, and Cora Leo arrived in Geraldine by the 12.30 coach yesterday, and took up their quarters in the Geraldine Hotel. As soon as it became known that the two first*named natural curiosities were at the hotel quite a number flocked in in the hope of seeing them. The General is indeed rightly named, for he is a mite, and yet, with the exception of his eyes, he gives the impression that he is a man in every way* The Circassian youth also attracted a deal of attention. The head of hair he possesses is enormous, and when arrayed for exhibition in public presents an appearance to be remembered.. The renowned Cora, too, is te the fore, bright, sparkling, clever as ever. The company opened in Geraldine in the evening, and they fully justified the newspaper re* ports which have appeared of them from time to time. To-day they open in To* muka, and those who desire to see some curiosities of nature cannot do better than pay them a visit. Welcome Retreat Lodge, No. 44 Geraldine. —The weekly meeting of this Lodge was held on Monday night, the W.C.T., Bro. G. H. Patrick, presiding. The business transacted was purely routine. At the conclusion of the ordinary meeting an open Lodge was held, when the following programme was successfully carried out :-*■ Song, Mies Andrews, “The Three Taung Men of Ware •” recitation, Bro. Ferguseon, “ There’s Something on My Breastsong, Mr Logan, “ Darling When the Leaves are Green; 1 * song, Miss Dunlop, “Twickenham Ferry reading, Bro. T, Sherratt; song, Bro. Herdman, “ Flow Gently, Sweet Afton song, Sister Maslin, “ Armies Resolve song, Bro. Herdman, “ Farewell to Stirling ;”song, Miss Dunlop, “Jessie’s Dream;*’ reading, Bro. Fergusson, “The Insignificance of this World song, Bro. Hoskins, “ The Soldier’s Farewell.’* This completed the programme. Miss Andrews accompanied most of the singers on the harmonium. During the evening the usual buns and coffee were banded round. At the conclusion the W.O.T. thanked those present for their attendance that evening. The singing of the national anthem concluded the meeting. The Chairman intimated that the annual picnic would be held this year at Feel Forest, and hoped to see a large attendance. South Obabi School Committee.—A special meeting of the South Qrari School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday, 12th mst. Present—Messrs R. A. Barker (Chairman), Bisiet, Emetic, McLeod, Ellis, Behrens, and Coles. The minutes of the lest meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read—From the Board of Education re school fund accounts for the year ending 31st inst., and re valuation of school buildings, furniture, etc. —The valua*, tiou was gone into at once. The school was examined by the Board’s Inspector on the 3rd inst., and the schedules showed that out of 32 examined in the standards, 99 passed, 2 failed, and I was excepted. Applications for sewing mistress and charwoman were not read, but were held over until next ordinary meeting. Mr fiinskin moved and Mr Coles seconded—“ That the school break up on Wednesday, 21st inst,; that the usual treat and prizes be given on the following Thursday, and that Friday the 16th inst bo a school holiday.” On the motion of Mr Bisset, seconded by Mr McLeod, Mesdames Yarco* and Smith were to be asked to examine the sewing on or before Monday the 19th inst. After discussion, the number of prizes, and the amount to be expended were agreed upon, and Messrs Binskin, Bissot, end Munro were appointed to select the prizes, Messrs Binskin, McLeod, Coles, Bisset, and Munro to be the the Treat Committee—to be assisted by a Committee of Ladies. It was agreed that a dance should be held on the treat night (22nd inst,) Admission ; Gentlemen, 2s; ladies, free. The subscription lists handed in by the children showed a sum of £9 6s 9d already collected. All the books were not yet in. The Prize and TreatCommitt.ee were to meet on Monday the 19th inst., on which evening also the next ordinary meeting of the Committee takes place. This being all the business the meeting terminated. To the ladies of Timaru and surrounding district.— Another reduction to meet the times, A cup of tea or coffee with cake supplied at all hours at the Railway Refreshment Booms for 6d.
