GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Boarii was held on Tuesday last. Messrs W,XT. Slack, E. E. Flatman, and J. Eelland. In the absence of the Chairman (Mr W. Postlethwaits) Mr Slack was voted to the chair. | MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. Tenders were received and dealt with as follows : Contract No. 238—Timber bridge near coal pit, Kakahu—R, Eae, £l3 4s (accepted). Contract No. 239 —Shingling Coll’* road, Waitobi Downs—A. Reid, £B3; P. Burke, £80; M. Duggan, £7O (accepted) ; Angland Bros, (informal). Contract No. 240—Forming and cutting Maxwell’s road, hear Kakahu Bush—M. Duggrn, £4O; R. Rae, £B3 10s 4d; A. Reid, £25; J. Fiefield, £22 (accepted) ; J. Beckley, £lB. Contract No. 241—Ford and drain, Geraldine Road—J. Fiefield, £24; J. Beckley, £lB (accepted). Contract 242—Cutting, etc., Taylor’s and Rae’sßo&djßangitata—J. Fiefield, £2O; P. Billing and Co., £lB lOij P. Burke, £lO (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and dealt with ; From Mr S. Buxton, M.H.R., Wellington, in reply to the Board’s letter, A and . stating he would do all in his power to prevent the member for Waimate obtaining the severance of the Waimate County from the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid district.—Read. , From Mr M.H.E., containing a similar reply.—Read. From Mrs S. Bell, and seven other ratepayers of the north side of the Waini river, requesting the Board not to go on private property on either side of the river for the . purpose ofl making or repairing any embankment on the river named. Should the Board do so they would hold them responsible for any damage done to their property.*—The Board had no intention of trespassing • on private property. From Mr H. Hunter*Brown, requesting the Board to hare the stone* picked off the side of the road known as Tripp’s road, in order that he might grub his gorse—A resolution was passed by the Board previously thah 6d per yard would be paid for collecting the stones. From Mr F. McShane, Geraldine Road, calling the Board’s attention to the necessity of cleaning the drain on DeEenzy’s road.—Overseer to get the work done.
From Messrs Smith, Hose, and Wilkinson; requesting the Board to fence that piece of road at the corner of Mr Rose’s section.—The Board failed to see the necessity of fencing, but did not object to the petitioners carrying out the work to the satisfaction of the Overseer.
From Mr Thomas Pithie, requesting permission to cart fifty yards' of stones from his land on. to the road, the Board to pay him ft small remuneration for the same.—-“ The Board did not at present require stones on this road. From Mr S. Skinner, Hilton, offering the Board a piece of land for the Hose of road deflation at Bedcliff, e price of £lO per acre, subject to certain conditions.—lt was decided to accept Mr Skinner’s offer. From Mr J. Sullivan, Pleasant Point, enclosing cheque Tor rates, and informing the Board that they had rated him for 87ac 2r 13p more than he owned.—The Clerk pointed oujirf that the valuation was taken from tluT Property Tax valuation. From Mr J. H. Baker, Crown Lands Office, Christchurch, in reference to a piece of land consented to by Mr N. Longley to be taken out of his section Ho, 41, part of reserve No. 389, for road purposes.— Received.
From Mr J. R. Fussell, Land Office, Timaru, stating that he was endeavoring to ascertain, on behalf of the Government, the extent to which the Californian thistle had established itself in South Canterbury, and requesting the Board to acquaint him with the locality, if any, where the thistle existed in the Geraldine district. = • EGAB, EBPIIBB. ; Mr Flatman drew the attention of the Board to the state of the road leading to Eangitata and Feel Forest, near the Orari Traffic Bridge. The same was in danger of being washed away.—lt was decided to write to the Geraldine County Council, calling their attention to the fact. , OVERSEER'S REroKT. The-Overseer’s report was road and dealt with as follows To the Chairman. Sib,—l hare again to report the recurranee of heavy freshes in 'the river* during the put month, which hava been the eaaae of a large expenditure of extra labor. Ho aaribui damage ha* been dona to any of tbs bridge*, although the shingle approaches hare in many oases been washed away. Tha greatest ohange has taken place at Sharper crowing on the Kakahu. The riverbed there has been widened considerably, and a cutting had to be made to giro aooeaa to the ’ ford.—Meisrs Wright and Abodes* application a I viuted the place complained of, and found the damage had been caused by catting down the green flax in the water-oArae os their land, and leaving the earns to drift down 4 by the flood water, This caused a dam, which backed tip the water in the paddock until the fence gave way by pressure. I have lowered J the ford a little, and 1 do not expect there will be any further cause for complaints— Footbridge*—l have taken down the Gteraldine footbridge, also the faotbridge at Hawke’s crossing, both. of which were quite decayed and unsafe. Shibhs, Oversssr. Re Hawke’s footbridge—lt was decided to do the work. It was also decided to refioor the office. OOBSE uro2f EOAD6. Several ratepayers having gorse growing npon roads, some dozen names were put into a hat and six drawn for. It wss decided that those persons whose names were drawn should be proceeded against in Court if the gorse adjoining their pioperty were not grubbed by next Board day. The following names were drawn : Messrs B. Casey, J• Sullivan, C. Waller, A. Reid, H. Hunter-Brown, And Mrs Bell SMALL BIRDS’ KUISAHCB. Mr W. Ooltman reported that up to date he had purchased 676 dozen eggs and birds, for which he had paid the sum of £8 9s. BATES. The names of six defaulting ratepayers were drawn by lot from a list srepared5 repared by fcbe Clerk, and it was ecided to issue summonses forthwith •gainst the persons drawn. ACCOUNTS. , Accounts amounting to £275 19s |d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
