At the Auckland Supreme Court on Wednesday, Morton was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude for larceny and Roberts, who pleaded “ Guilty ’’ to a similar charge, to eighteen months’ hard labor. R. 0. Polley pleaded “ Guilty ”to attempted suicide, and was bound over on surety for twelve months. J. Smith was charged with obtaining goods by false pretences, but the jury disagreed and were discharged. A boy named Fredk. KUnk, four years old, was struck by a cow-catcher on the engine of the Wellington train at Feilding on Wednesday. His skull is fractured and brain protruding, and his recovery is doubtful. The Education Department have received a letter from the Humane Society of Australasia, intimating that the Society have decided to offer a bronze medal to each school in the colony for proficiency in swimming exercises with reference to saving life, also to give certificates of proficiency in theoretical knowledge of the art of saving life from drowning, sunstroke, apoplexy, etc., each school in order to qualify to contribute t® the funds of the Society, thus cons'ituting the head master a member of the Society. The man Stanley, reported missing at Wellington has been found staying with a relative in the country. The Nelson Education Board at a meeting agreed with the raising of the school age to six, providing it did not interfere with country schools.
