ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Dec. 3, Lord Harrington, speaking at Rosendale, objected to “ the one man one vote” principle, and said that Unionists would only rejoin the Liberal parly when the latter abandoned the Home Rule party.
The appointment of Sir J. B. Thurston as Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, is officially announced, Dec. 5, The latest bulletin gives hopeful accounts of the condition of the Crown Prince of Germany. The prospectus of the Mount Allen Silvermining Company of Queensland has been issued. Tbs capital is £200,000. Lord Lyons, who has been in a very precarious condition for a week past, expired to-day. His Grace the Archbishop cf Canterbury has convoked a Pun-Anglican Conference, which will assemble on July 3rd. New Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock is quoted to-day at £96 10s, being on advance of £2 (?). ' The Times this morning has an article upon the meditated assumption of the name “Australia” by New South Wales, The writer deals with the subject in a humorous manner, and suggests the adoption of “ Eastern Australia ” if a change of name is im-i. peralive.
Vienna, Dec. 5. Reports received of the massing of Russian cavalry along the frontier are causing a feeling of disquietude here and at Berlin, Naples, Dec. 4. A report has been received in this city that the town of Bisignano, in Calabria, has been destroyed by earthquake, A rescue party have up to the present extricated twenty dead bodies, and fears are entertained for the safety of a number of inhabitants who are still missing. The villages in the vicinity have been more <r less damaged by the earthquake. [Bisignano, anciently kno'ffn as Besidi®, is a town of Nap! in the provincial district of Calabria Citra, having about 5000 inhabitants. It is fifteen mi es north of Cosenza, and about 145 miles S.JS. of the town of Naples, It possesses a castle, a cathedral, and severed churches. The principal trade is in silk].
AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Dec, 5. The Government have decided, ponding an agreement with tbe other colonies for united action in stopping Chinese immigration, to place additional restrictions upon Chinamen entering Victoria by refusing to recognise naturalisation papers unless evidence of identification is complete. Prayers were offered in the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches of this city yesterday for the recovery of the Crown Prince of Germany, Dec, 6. News has been received here by cable of the sudden death of Baron Hawke, father of Mr M, B. Hawke, who is at present playing with Mr Vernon’s team of English cricketers. The Melbourne Cricket Club forwarded the telegram to Mr M. B. Hawke (who succeeds to the title) tendering their condolences, and offering to release him from his Australian engagements, Baron Hawke was aged 72. A newspaper correspondent writing from Derby speaks very hopefully of the Kimberley diggings. Ho says that fifty claims are at present being worked, Several reefs are proving very rich. The navvies employed upon the Lilydalo and Uelensvale Railway work have struck for increased wages. The men demand that the rate of pay shall be 7s 6d to 8s a day in lieu of 7s as at present paid.. Sydney, Dec. 5. Arrived—Te Anau, from Auckland. H.M.B. Diamond left this port last evening for New Zealand. A shocking bathing fatality is reported from Ryde (Kissing Point). A young man while bathing in the Parramatta River, near that town, yesterday was seized by a shark and eaten, Dec. 6. A sculling match for the Championship of the World has been arranged to take place between Peter Kemp, the present bolder of the championship, and Clifford, on February lith. Hanlan offers to row either or both men. A challenge has been issued by Trickelt to row Hanlan, and it has been accepted., The race will lake place on the Fitzroy river.

couse why he should not be suspended. His Honor requested that the enquiry might be open to the public. He also asked that ho should be represented by counsel, Both nquests were refused by His Excellency, and the Chief Justice accordingly declined to appear. Public sympathy is strongly in favor of Chief Justice Onslow, and the action of the Governor is condemned on all sides.
