At the Pontefract County Court, Mies Hornicastie, dressmaker, Kensington, sued Mr Holden, of that place, for 19a 4d, for the making of a dress in which defendant’s wife might attend a Primrose League picnic. The defence was that the dress was a bad fit. His Honor caused the lady to put on the dress so that he could judge of plaintiff’s handiwork. A verdict was given for the defendant, the plaintiff to have the dress returned. Leave was given for a new trial before a jury-
The continuous applications for leave of absence by Auckland teachers has forced the city schools committee to pass a resolution recommending the Education Board aot to pay teachers when they aro absent from duty. Most of the applications are from the female teachers.
Several of the French railway companies and other public bodies have resolved on having their printing done on green instead of white paper. The reason for the alteration is that they believe the combination of white paper with black characters endangers the eyesight of their workpeople. Hungarian papers report that, this year’s crop of cereals promises to be the moat abundant since 1882. It is estimated that wheat alone will yield 40,000,000 quintnsl, or 15,000,000 to 17,000,000 quintals more than will bo needed for home consumption.
The French and Italian newspapers which reported that the Krupp concern was financially embarrassed have been sued for libel by the surviving members of the firm.
A Russian engineer has invented an explosive which, in its application to all the present uses of powder, excels melinite and all other explosives known, The composition, of course, is a secret, and Russia is to build a special factory for its manufacture.
The longevity of Lord Chancellors and Judges is proverbial. Brougham at the time of his death was eighty-nine, Lord St. Leonards eighty-six, and Yice-Ohancellor Bacon did not retire from the judicial Bench lust year until he reached the age of eighty-eight.
