A CROWN PROSECUTOR INTOXICATED.
A grave scandal has occurred in connection with the present sitting of the Sydney Metropolitan Quarter Sessions. It appears that the Crown Prosecutor entered the building in an unmistakeable state of intoxication, and behaved in a most outrageous manner, and as the business of the court proceeded his behavior necessitated Judge Dowling insisting upon order being maintained, and the climax was reached when the Crown Prosecutor suddenly asked, “ Who won the Melbourne Cup?” At this stage, Judge Dowling adjourned the court for two hours, and in the meantime another official person was procured to go on with the business. The foreman of the jury, at the request of his brother jurors, has entered a protest against such a scandal being allowed to take place, and has gone so far as to state that, in the opinion of jurors, certain prisoners were acquitted mainly because of the incapacity of the Crown Prosecutor. Judge Dowling has forwarded a report of the matter to the Attorney-General, who after due enquiry, has ordered the officer to show cause why he should not be removed from his position.— Exchange.
