Mr Ballance has given instructions to his solicitor to take action against Mr Gilbert Carson, proprietor of the Wanganui Chronicle, for certain references made to Mrs Ballance. The Wellington correspondent of the Press, writing on Tuesday, says :—“ Mr Ballance’s libel action against the Wanganui Chronicle for remarks on Mrs Ballance has caused some talk, and it is explained that the paragraph on which Mr Ballance bases bis claim was taken from the Hawke’s Bay Herald, and refers to a story about changing cooking stoves for gas stoves, and also naming Mrs Ballance as having ordered a £4O pair of curtains at the expense of the country and then not using them. Mr Ballance says he has no objection to any remarks made about himself, but does not care to see hie wife’s name used in this way, especially when the charge is not true. It is said to be probable that the Hawke’s Bay Herald will also receive a 'awyer's letter. As a matter of fact, Mr and Mrs Ballance did not occupy a Ministerial residence at all.
