Easily Settled. —At a committee meeting of a Forth Island candidate recently, one of the speakers related the following amusing story “ A poor woman in Liverpool went to market to procure a joint of meat for her family** Sunday dinner, and purchased a sheep’s head. Tho butcher wrapped it in paper and plasei it in her basket, saying ‘That’s a splendid head—a real Liberal.’ On hearing this the woman bogged him to take it back as she dare not take it home, for her husband was a Tory. The butcher took it back, chopped it down the middle and took out the brains, and assured her that it was all right now —a real Tory. She went homo happy.” The Violet Cambuox Case. When tho De Bensaude divorce case was so disreputably settled, the public fondly hoped that they had heard the last of Miss Yiolot Cameron’s matrimonial troubles. Not a bit of it. A month pass o *, and then, lo ! and behold, we have Mi De Bensaude again summoned for persecuting his wife by ringing her front door he'd and attempting to force an entrance lo her domicile. Tho story told by Miss Cameron’s lawyer (Mr Lewis) ran thus:—Before the divorce case came to trial De Bensuade agreed to taka £llOO to squash proceedings. Ho also promised to let hia wife live in peace and quiet henceforward. “ The Alloo,’* said Mr Lewis, “ this man fully believed to be the price of his wife’s honor ; yet at the trial jhe got up and withdrew all aspersions on her character. Now, having spent the £llOO, the wretch is trying to extort more by re-»ommencing his persecution* and making her life wretched. De Bensaude, who is one of the most contemptible persons on G-od’s earth, feebly endeavored to deny Mr Lewis’s statement, averring that he only called on his wife to remonstrate with her for receiving Lord Lonsdale. Unfortunately the magistrate could not see his way to punishing the man merely for ringing his wife's bell. He warned him, however, to de.dst from worrying her, or further proceedings would be taken.—Exchange. To the ladies of Timaru and surrounding district.— Another reduction to meet the times.
