At the Xt.M. Court, Wellington, yeiterday, Thoj. Pinckney, on a charge of em* bezzlemsnt, was sentenced to six mootbe' bard labor. Mrs Wardell, wife of the Resident Magistrate at Wellington, died suddenly at Masterton yesterday morning, it is Blip* posed of heart disease. | At the Auckland Police Court, yesterday, W. Cuthbert was charged with crossing the railway at Newmarket with a cart on the 10th inst., when an engine was within a quarter of a mile of the crosaio?. This was a prosecution at the instance of tho Government arising out of the accident in which a cart was smashed and a man and a horse narrowly escaped being killed. Pending the action of the Minister.of Public Works the hearing was adjourned for a week. James Charleston, labourer, residing in Hohson street, Auckland, dropped dead whilst at w«rk at the dockyards on Monday morning. He was affected with heart, disease. Charleston leaves a wife and five children. The Government has deoided to accord the deceased chief, the Hon. Wi Tako Ngatate a military funeral in recognition of the military services rendered by him te the colony. The report of the Mosgiel Wollen Factory Company shows that, after making all due provision and writing off £IOOO for depreciation, there ia a profit of £2788. On Saturday night at 10.30, Mr Howell Panhoulet, aged 30, * civil engineer, residing at Mount Eden, Auckland, cut his throat with a razor, and died within an hour.
