GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the County Council took place on Wednesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. Mackay, W. M. Moore, R. A. Barker, and Wm. Balfour. A special order constituting the Woodbury water-supply district paised at the Inst special meeting of the Council on October 12th was duly confirmed and signed with the County seal. The Chairman aaid he expected to see an application from the Temnka Road Board with nferenco to the Winchester bridge, which really required attendirg to at once, but as it had not yet b-en received hothing could be done in the matter at that meeting. * A letter was read from Mr Tripp r* taking of land for water-race.—lt was resolved that Mr Tr'pp’s demand be acceded to the rate of £ls per acre, the I timber to belong to him, and to bs removed by him at his pleasure. From Mr A. E. G, Rhodes, M.G.R., acknowledging the receipt of Mr J, Calculi’s report, also a telegram re Seadown water-supply, which lud been forwarded to him ; and also acknowledging receipt of a copy of resolution with reference to subsi'iies, which would receive his at'ention. Prom the Mount Peel Ho ad Board, j Stating that a concrete culvert ought to be | put in on the Ornri water-race across the road at Tripp’s cutting, between reserve 1801 »nd section 31250, as the 'bottom of the race at this point will bo about sft. below (ho level of the road, causing a too steep incline on each side of lire ford, which will always be an obstruction to traffic,—The Engineer explained t hat when the crossing in question was finished the level would on ! y be 3ft. Cin., and the incline would not be steep. The cost of a divert would be an expensive matter. We understand, however, that Mr Rilcock has been very busy obtaining a steam plough, with which he anticipates m iking very npid progress.—Opihi Protective Woiks ; This contract has been very satisfactorily completed for the contract sum. We are glad to report that the works have had a very good effect in preventing the river from encroaching on the northern bank. The Engineers made a long report on the Pareora Brigde, in which they recommended that the decking should be taken up and relaid, the width between the handrails reduced from 17ft. to 13ft., and the weight of loads allowed to pass over it limited to four or five tons. The 1 report was approved of, and it was decided to send it to the Wairnate Counci l , when, if they approved of it, the repairs ! should be carried out at once. On the motion of Mr Mackay, seconded by Mr Moore, a strong resolution was ■ passed protesting ag-iost tho dirision of the W»iumte County from the South . Canterbury Hospital District. Resolved “That seeing the impossibility of the Temuka-Oxford Railway being ever construct sd; and that the bridge built over the Temuka River on that line is not only therefore useless, hut injurious, as impeding the free course of the river, the Minister of Public Works be asked if he would be willing to hand over tho bridge to the County Council for (lie purpose of removal, and its pro- , bable use in erecting a bridge or bridges elsewhere.” Proposed by Mr Barker, seconded by , Mr Mackay, and carried—“ That tho re- ' presontatives of the district be asked to take the necessary steps to enable County Councils to increase or vary the dog tax.” Accounts amounting to- £*475. 16s 81 were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
