S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Thursday. Present Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), R. A. Barker, J. Talbot, W. B. Howell, M. Gray, B. H. Pearpoint, and Revs. T. J. Smythe, and G. Barclay. Special reports by the Inspector on several schools were read. The one in refisrence to the Waimalaitai School excited some comment, and was referred to the Committee.
Mr Jackson reported in reference to the moveable school question. He submitted a plan and explained that such school would consist of sections, which could be taken to. pieces and carted about. It would accommodate about thirty children. —After some discussion it was resolved, oo the motion of Mr Barclay seconded by Mr Barker—“ That the report and plan of portable buildings be hsld over for further consideration when the Board is in a position practically to contemplate the erection of school buildings.' 1 The rebuilding of the Winchester School was discussed at some length. The Board have £3OO in hand available for the purpese, but the Architect reported that that would provide for a building capable of accommodating not more than 73 children, whereas one capable of accommodating 100 was needed. Ultimately it was resolved on. the motion of Mr Barc'ay seconded by Mr Barker—“ That the architect be requested to prepare plans for a school at Winchester, the cost not to exceed J 5300, and for this sum to provide accommodation for the largest possible number, say at least 76.” The Secretary brought up the matter of the salary paid to Miss Bennett, the Mistress of the school now carried on at Winchester, which, under the circumstances was held to be inadequate. After consideration Mr Barclay proposed, Mr Barker seconded, and it was resolved—- “ That the school at Winchester, under the present circumstances be placed on the footing of an ordinary school with a lady teacher.” . The question.of dividing off portions of a schoolroom was discussed. The Pleasant Point School was in need of certain divisions but it was not certain whether a wooden partition or curtains would be preferable,—The. matter was left for the architect to. report upon. The OpiUi/Committee wrote asking for a £ for ; £ grant for the removal ef certain outbuildings, the cost of which would be £B.—Granted. The-Pleasant Point Committee wrote asking the Board to allow the schoolmaster's bouse to be papered, at a cost of £3.—A grant of £llos was passed, contingent on £3 being spent in plastering, distempering, etc. An application from the Rhubarb Flat Committee that the Board should put up .a school on a site of acres offered by Mr Hammond was held over for future consideration. The Re vs. T. J. Smyth, and GK Barclay and Mr Mel rille Gray were appointed a .scholarship. Committee. '""'Matters affecting the Pareora and Waipufte Schools were dealt with, and the meeting terminated.
