A.J.O. MEETING.

The second day’s racing of the Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting took place at Elemington on Tuesday. It being Cup day the attendance was enormous. Results: —

Melbourne Cup ; 2 miles, Mr Donovan’s Dunlop ...

Mr Coper’s Silvermine ... Mr Gannon’s Australian Peer

There were eighteen starters, among them being Algerian, Silver Pince, Thunderbolt, Tranter, Oakleigb, Recall, Remus, Cranbrook, and Sardius, Trident, Affluence, and Frisco were scratched. The race proved a splendid one, the time, 3min 28£sec, being the fastest on record. The winner is the joint property of Saunders, who rode him, and the Newmarket hotelkeeper. Dunlop’s victory has saved many big double books, and, as far as can be ascertained, there are no heavy winners over him, the bookmakers being the chief gainers. Both Silvermine and Australian Peer were bad horses for the ring. The total value of the stakes for the winner amounts to £3845. The owners also receive a solid gold horse shoe, mounted on a silver and bronze shield, worth 100 sovereigns. The Jockey receives a massive gold-mounted whip. The Hurdle Race was won by Mr Martin’s ch g Friction, the Railway Handicap by Mr Thomson’s Master Johns, the Kensington Stakes by Mr Hill’s Venture, the Nursery Handicap by Mr O. Sampson’s Magpie, and the Tan Yean Stakes by Mr Drake’s Pasha.
