The Customs.— During the month of October the Customs duties collected at the port of Timaru amounted to £153614s 7d-

Timaru Harbor Board, —Mr D. M. Robb has been elected a member of the Timaru Harbor Board in the room of Mr E. G. Kerr resigned.

Supreme Court.—Mr Justice Johnston has been granted a year’s leave of absence, and Mr Justice Ward has been appointed to the temporary charge of the Canterbury district.

Rbvbhub.— The Customs revenue collect ed in the colony last month amounted to £124,098 as against £106,866 for the previous month, and £104910 for the corresponding month in 1886. The total amount collected for the seven months of the financial year is £746,645, which is an increase of about £15,500 over the Treosuror’e estimate for that period. The beer duty collected last month was £4,155. For the seven months of the year the • -.minim, is £27,444 which shows a deficit of £3,472, as compared with the estimates.

Mb Bevoe's Petition. —Mr Bryce’s election petition charges Mr Hutchison, by himself or bis agents, with giving and promising to give a money consideration to voters; wtih promising to procure offices and places of employment for voters; with, by himself or bis agents, making gifts, loans, offers, promises, and ag/eements to voters ; with paying money to persons with intent that it should bs expended in bribery ; with giving and providing meat, drink, and entertainment for voters on election day ; with treating; with employing persons for payment, against the provisions of the Act; with paying railway fare, hiring conveyances, etc ; with inducing persons to vote who were disqualified. 1.0.G.T., Geraldine. —The weekly meet ing of the Welcome Retreat Lodge, No. 44, Geraldine, was held in the Good Temphr Hall on Monday evening last, Bro. G. Belhune, W.0.T., presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the officers' roll called. The report of the Committee appointed to draw up a code of rules for the guidance of the hall cleaner was read and adopted. It was decided to call tenders for the office of hall cleaner, the tenders to be in by next Lodge night. The nomination and election of officers for the ensuing term was next proceeded with, and resulted as follows { —W.O.T., Bro. G. H. Patrick ; W.T.T., Sister Maslin; Secretary, Bro. Fisher (re-elected) ; Treasurer, Bro. W. Coltraan, junr.; W. 0., Bro. Herdman; VLM., Bro, T. Bowkett; W.1.G., Bro. .1. Hay ; W.0.G., Bro. E. Logan. The office of W.F.8., was ordered to stand over for the present. After harmony, the Lodge was closed by the W.O.T.

R.M. Court, Timaru.— At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Tiraar.J, on Tuesday, before J. S. Beawick, Erq., R.M., a “ prohibitionist" named J. Langmuir Smith was charged with drunkenness, and sentenced to t*o months’ imprisonment. W. J. Ivey was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for deserting his wife and family. In the case of Wm. Frew v. Jane Frew, the husband applied to have varied an order made by the Resident Magistrate, by which the custody of a child of t e marriage was given to the mother at the time of the separation of the parents, Mr White appeared for the petitioner and Mr Hay to oppose. After hearing counsel and the evidence of the petitioner, His Worship raid he would not vary the order, which stated that the mother should have the custody of the child up to six years and then up to ten. The application was refused. New Gold Diogunob. Pebbly HIU Diggings, twenty-four miles from Invercargill, are attracting some attention, and the number of men on them has doubled within the past week, there being now about sixty on the ground, mostly settlors in the Hedgehope district adjoining. A correspondent of the Southland Times, while deprecating a rush to the field, says that gold seems to be very evenly distributed, all getting a share. The stripping is about 2ft and the washdirt about the same. One party, howeyer, have sunk a shaft 15ft and came on a second layer of wash, which is lobe richer than the surface one. While there have been statements that 15s to £2 a day are made, it is safe to say that the claims return Wages only, or about 7s a day. The site of the diggings is an Otago University endowment, and is about fourteen miles from Woodlands station on the Dunedin line, Jt is expected that little will be done during the summer months, unless public enterprise brings in a water-race, as water is already failing. The diggings now extend over a distance of four miles, G-ekaldinb Lawn- Tennis Club.—The Annual general meeting of this Club was held pn Tuesday evening, October 25tb. Present —Messrs J, Cpnnipghaip (in the chair), A. E. Hawkins, H, B. Webster, H. W. Moore, A. H. Brisco, and E. Mabin. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. Mabin; Committee; Messrs Cunningham, Brisco, Hawkins, Webster, Moore, WihourSmitb, and Evans, three to form a quorum. Messrs Wilson-Smitb, W. Evans, and J. A. Fitzgerald were elected new members.
