The Registrar of the Wellington Supreme Court on Tuesday received the petition of Mr Wi Pere, challenging the election of Mr James Carroll, who was returned as member for the Eastern Maori electorate. The alleged ground is bribery. The necessary deposit of £2OO has been made with the Supreme Court.
At the Wellington -Supreme Court on Tuesday, judgment was delivered in a case with referency to estreatrnent of recognisances entered into for the appearame at the last criminal sittings of one Robin, committed for trial on a charge of embezzlement. Mr Justice Richmond held that the recognisances were void, on the ground that they were not taken by the committing magistrate but before another justice; A complimentary banquet was given at We'lington on Tuesday to the Hon. G. Fisher by his supporters. From the Ist January this year up to Monday, the output from the Wesiport Coal Company's Coalbrookdale mine was 100,000 tons. An-additional 23,000 tons is expected to be put out before the end of the year. The Company's output in 1886 was 73,809 ions. . The Anglican Synod was opened at Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon. Bishop Nevill, in his address, dealt with the necessity of the Synod's formulating a policy for the guidance of the whole body, so that Ihe views of the Church might be known in a concrete form, when politicians could not ignore their views. As to ndigirus education, the profound conviction of the Church was that the present was bised upon tho fatal mistake that secular knowledge was sufficient. On the question of contributions he said that giving 'owardn the maintenance of the chuich should not be looked upon like the comp'acent offering of a {shilling to a b-ggar. The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Synod of dago and Southland commenced .at Dunedin on Tuesday evening, when the Moderator, the Rev.
