LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Geraldine Monthly Sale.—Themonthly sale of stock, etc., at Geraldine takes place to* morrow. Stud Horan,—On Saturday morning the Clydesdale horse Early Morning was submitted to auction in Timaru, and was knocked down to Mr W. Moore for 290 guinea*. Abowhbhua Town Board.— The monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board takes place to-morrow erening, when among the business will be the appointment of a clerk, Mr George Dyson haring resigned that position. Local Industry.—By an advertisement appearing in another column it will be seen that Messrs Mundell and Co. sell a large assortment of pottery on Saturday next. The pottery is from the Milton Works, and buyers will therefore be supporting a local industry. St. Andrew's School.— At a meeting of the St. Andrew’s School Cemmittea the other day Mr Montague Cooke applied for the position of pupil teacher in the school, and the Committee decided to recommend the Board of Education to appoint him to snob position. A Successful Teacher.— We are glad to notice that as the result of the annual standard oxaminatbn of the Westport Girls School, held on tbs 4th and sth insts., Mits Meredith (lately mistrsss of the Kakahu Bush School) has received an excellent report, the school having passed 95 per cent. Karakul Meat Preserving Works.— The Meat Preserving Works at Kakanui have been purchised from ths N.Z. Meat Preserving Company (whoso shareholders reside in Southland) by a Christchurch company, and operations will shortly bs recommenced at the works on an extensive scale.
Political Rumor.—The correspondent of A contemporary telegraphing on Saturday eayi Major Atkinson is extremely unpopular with the Southern men, as Sir John Hall ie With the Northerners. It is said that if Major Atkinson succeeds m forming a Government he will sell Crown lands to the extent of £300,000 and hopes to retrench to the extent of £300,000.
Volunteer Encampment.—The annual •is days’ drill and encampment of the Canterbury T»omanry Cavalry and the North Otago Hussars took pl&oa last week. The men were camped at Oamaru, and were drilled each day. The men have been highly complimented on all bands for their behaviour while in.camp and for their attention to drill. The Canterbury man left for home by special train on Sunday.
TbmukaDaibt Pactobt.— the monthly meeting of the directors of the Temuka Dairy Company was held on Thursday last. Present —Messrs J. Brown (chairman), Austin, Cam, and Scott. Accounts amounting to £2 61 41 were passed for payment. The tender of Mr Q-. Lynch for the erection of a cottage in brick for £224 was accepted. The Secretary reported that the final shipment of cheese had been forwarded by the Wakatipu; also that the factory had commenced working, the quantity of milk recsired that morning being 247 gallons. After some further routine business the meeting terminated.
Young Offbndbes. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, yesterday, two children named Wm. and Jas. Auld were charged with placing an obstruction on the railway line near Timaru on Saturday night las'. Mr M. J. Lynoh, who appeared for the children, pleaded guilty for them, and urged the Bench to take a lenient view of the matter on account of the age of the offenders. Inspector Broham stated that the accused had placed a carpet bag, some bricks, and a large sheet of iron on the railway line. The father was severely cautioned, and a fine of 20s for each child was imposed, with the alternative of seven days’ imprisonment, care to be taken to keep them from intercourse with other prisoners.
Abbitae o? R.M.B, Rimutaka. Th* Riosutaka, from London, arrived at Welling* ton at six o’clock on Sunday evening. She left London on the evening of the 25th August, and after embarking mails and pas* sengere at Plymouth, she left at 1.30 p.m. on the 27tk August, the weather being fine. She has made the round voyage without stoppage of her engines. She brings 266 bags mails. The Southern portion left by the Wunaka the same evening. Amongst her passengers from Plymouth to the Cape were the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. His Lordship stated it was his intention to follow to Now Zealand by the nett steamer. The Hon. E. J. C. Stevens, M.L.C., who has been appointed Colonial Secretary in the new Ministry, was also a passenger. Gbbaedinb Rifles.— An inspection parade of this corps took place on Thursday evening last. There were 43 on parade. Lieut.Colonel Bailey was the inspecting officer, and there wore present Major Moore, Captain Pearpoint, Lieuts. Ward and McKenzie, and Sergt,-Major Jones, The men were put through the manual exercise and position by Lieut. McKenzie, after which they were taken outside and put through outpost drill by Captain Pearpoint and the Drill Instructor. AS the condulion of the parade Colonel Bailey complimented the corps on the improvement they had made. It was evident to him that both officers and men were taking an interest in their duties. There would probably be a field day at Orari on Nov. 9tb, and he hoped to see a good muster of the men and officers.
