IRISH AFFAIRS.

Lonpon, Oct. 5. A special meeting of the Dublin Corporation has been held, at which it was resolved that Mr Sullivan, the Lord Mayor, who is summoned to appear to-morrow on a charge of publishing in the newspapers Ijnited Ireland and the Nation reports of the doings of the suppressed branches of the Irish National League, should attend the Police Court in his robes of State, and be attended by an aiderman.

A deputation from Kidderminster has presented Mr Gladstone with a handsome carpet, they congratulated him on his Irish policy, and condemned the repressive measures adopted by the Government. Mr Gladstone accepted the presentation, and, in thanking them for their gift, said that though he had suffered a smashing defeat at the elections of 1886, yet recent elections indicated that the public opinion was rapidly changing, and he was hopeful of soon returning to power. The secession of Mr Goschen and other Liberals had tended greatly to weaken the Liberal party, but those gentlemen were now placed in a most deplorable position, being connected with the Conservative party. Referring to the Irish question, he said that a settlement of the difficulty would be speedily arrived at, and he was delighted that the Tories had forestalled the Liberals in bringing about that settlement. Mr Bright has published a letter m which he says that it is necessary that Irish tenants should he freed from the suspicion that they had entered into a conspiracy to encourage dishonesty and crime.
