A largely attended public meeting called by the Mayor was held at Hamilton (Auckland) on Saturday, to consider the question of the gold discovery at Waihou, when it was resolved to urge upon the Government the great necessity for taking steps to secure to the public the full benefit of the gold deposit in the Thames Valley. A Committee was formed with this object, A rumor is current that gold has been discovered at Pukekohe West, Auckland, similar to that discovered at Wnitoo.
Joseph Kennedy, sheep inspector at Wanganui, died suddenly on Monday morning. Since the bridges across the Blackvvater and Greenstone (West Coast) have been washed away accidents have been numerous, some amounting to narrow escapes from death from drowning. While H. Robertson, on Friday last, was crossing the Blackwater stream with a mob, a number of them were drowned, and Foley, who vo'unteered to assist in crossing, was swept down stream over fifty yards, being rolled over and over by the current, until a man named Hutchison jumped in from the bank, seized him by the collar, and dragged him out. A deputation of supporters waited on Mr Sevan at Hokitika on Saturday and alltged that the provisions of the Corrupt Practices Prevention Act had been contravened in many ways, and requested him to take steps to have Mr Grimmond unsealed, £2OO was subscribed for the purpose, and more money would be forthroming if necessary. Mr Bevnn said he could not take the sent under the circumstances, though he was satisfied that roll stuffing, personation, double voting, bribery, voting of minors, etc., bad been carried on. . Judge Richmond has decided that the Official Assignee must admit that the Wellington City Advance Company’s claim to prove for £I9OO in Waters’ estate. At the Diocesan Synod, Wellington, the Rev. J! Still moved a resolution in ; tbe direction of allowing denominational schools to haye some allowance from the public fund, provided they satisfied the Government Inspector in secular knowledge and other requirements. After a long debate the motion was carried. Mr C. C, Howard, formerly head master of the training college, Wellington, and Miss Hay, have . been appointed master and mistress of the JPictcn School.
At a’meeting of the .Awatere Rabbit Board' the Chairman read a letter frem Mr Beaumont, a run-holder, who has made various experiments in getting rid of the rabbit pest on his property. He slated ho hud spent over £II,OOO in six years so successfully, that it now only cost him £SO per annum. The Board has ordered a shipment of stoats and weasels. The cost will be about £2OOO.
Maior, Atkinson left Nelson for Wellington Tuesday morning. There is no furlher development of the, political situation, Malachi Taylor, of Brunnerton, a brewer, was on Tuesday fined £lO and costs for a breach of the 6th section of the Beer Act, 1880.
Two Christchurch milkmen were convicted of selling adulterated milk on Tuesday. One, whose milk contained skim milk and was 8 per cent deficient in cream, wai fined 40s. The other, who sold milk containing 10 per cent of water and 20 per cent skim milk, was fined 80s. Tho Children of the District High School at Port Chalmers have prepared ap address to Sir Robert Stout regretting his defeat, and asking him “for the sake of young Now Zealand,” to reconsider his decision not to allow himself to be returned for another constituency.
