Ontward correspondence was read and approved of. Inward was read as follows . „ From Mr C. G. Tnpp, informing the Board that by the water-rece now being made by the Geraldine County Council above Woodbury a largo body of vinter would be allowed to run to waste into Reid’s creek, and suggesting that the same might be utiliwd for a water supply for the town. He also stated the willingness of himself and a friend to give £2 2* each towards the cost of obtaining an opinion Mr Merchant as to the practicability of the race.—lt was decided to accept the ofler of Mr Tripp re opinion, provided the cost to the Board was not more than specified, from the Sumner, Inglewood, Carterton, Waverley, Bulls, and Kamo Town Boards, in reply to a circular from the Geraldine Town Board, asking these Boards to co-operate with it in obtaining «n amendment in the Town Distiicts Act 1881. The Bomds expressed their willingness to co-operate with the Board. A reply was also received from the Lin wood Town Board, stating that the matter was under consideration. From Mr J. Jackson, Tiniaru, offering cement at 14s per cask.—None wanted. From Mr W. From W. Badger, re “ The Local Bodies Guide and Ratepayer’s Manual.” From Mr B. Taylor, asking the Board to have the footpath in Peel street, from the corner of the Geraldine Hotel to the uriool, shingled.—lt was resolved to have the work done.
BOARD’S PLANT. The Overseer having reported that the toller having been let out had been brought back in a cracked condition, it was resolved to rescind ibe resolution passed at the previous meeting to allow the roller to be let out at Is per day. It was also decided not to let out any of the Board’s plant whatever. It was also decided not to lend any cement or other material whatsoever to private persons. In the event of any person ' being completely out, the Board would he willing to sell such material on the approval of the Chairman, and the cash being received before the article left the yard. overseer's report. The Overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows : “ To the Chairman of the Geraldine Town Board.
“Sines the last ordinary meeting the contract for gravelling the street and footpaths has been completed, including the 150 yards authorised, the contractor having done his work well. The footpath newly gravelled at the lower end of Talbot street has been blinded with clay. Rather too much clay was used, but it will soon set hard now and form a good path. The big stones have been broken all along the Pleasant Valley road, and the t«o lamp posts erected now await the iron work and lamps. The recent heavy rains have not done much damage to the streets and footpaths. One sixinch pipe culvert was found to be too email in front of Mr Geo. Taylor’s, and the pipes at the end of High Street got slopped up with debris, both of which have been attended to, and as far as 1 know no further obstruction or damage has been done within the Town District. The receipts for the month have been— Licenses, £1 17a 6d (carriage) ; publican’s transfer, £2 ; total, £3 17s 61. which has been paid into the bank. Be works— Pratt’s r I have inspected the line of road applied for by Mr Pratt, and beg to state that the road needs draining and forming along Shaw street for a distance of eight chains. One six-inch pipe drain needs to bo put into the gu'ly leading out the Police reserve, with filling over tho top, ' This road needs forming only on one side for the present and would cost £1 per •hajn, or £8 for the whole, formation only. Waibi Footbridge: In conjunction with Mr Shiera I have inspected! this bridge, and find that since this fresh on Sunday last the whole of the water is coming down on this side. If the bridge were repaired at the west end in all probability it would have the effect of forcing the water into the channel on the other or east side of the bridge, and the question arises as to whether the waterway should be contracted by a solid earthwork embankment, with a heavy concrete block at east end of present structure or to lengthen the bridge, with the addition of neyeral spans of a timber bridge. To lengthen the present structure at both ends and to contract the water-way, would cost nearly £9O. To contract the water-way there is danger of turning the river upon either bank. Therefore Mr Shiers and I are of opinion it would be the best for a deputation of the two Boards to meet on the ground aed decide as to thereat course to be adopted. Next Tuesday will be the Road Board’s sitting. “ C. 3L. Shberatt, . “ Overseer.”
Ms Pratt’s—lt was decided to write to the Waste Lands Board, forwarding an estimate of the cost of making the roads to the deferred payment sections, and asking the Waste Lands Board to forward the amount to the Board.
IiHE »OOTBUID*E, A considerable amount of feeling was shown over this item of the Overseer’s report. Mr Quin moved—-“ That a deputation wait upon the Road Board rt the bridge. 1 ' Mr Williams seconded the proposition. Mr Mashn moved as an amendment- That no deputation wait upon the Road Board, on the ground of Iho expenditure being outside of the town
disniot," He had always been against the bridge, and should oppose it at every stage. The expenditure was totally illegd. Mr Dunlop seconded the amendment. Ho, too, was convinced that the expenditure was illegal, and therefore lie
could not support it. He would bko to see the bri Ige there as well as anybody, but upon the grounds he had mentioned he could not vote for it. Those persons who voted for it would have to refund the money themselves. The Chairman said he was quite satisfied that the expenditure was legal. The question of having to refund the money was a great bogey. Ho was quite satisfied of the legality of the expenditure, or ho would not have taken the action ho did in the matter. The amendment was then put. Messrs Maslin, Dunlop and Berry voting for if. Upon the original motion being put it was carried, Messrs Taylor, Williams, and the Chairman voting
for it. Messrs Williams, Tayloif and the Chairman were then appointed a deputation to confer with the Hoad Board re the bridge. i THE POUNDKEEPBR, It was decided that the Chairman ' should see the Poundkeeper re impounding the cattle wandering in the town, and report at the next meeting.
