ALLEGED ASSAULT.
Dunedin, Sept, 30. At the City Police Court, David Goldsmith, Daniel Hamilton, and Andrew Craig were charged with, on the 27th S-'pt, asra ilting one Margaret Wilson. Mr Solomon, with him Mr D, M. Stuart, appeared for the accused. The Court having been cleared the prosecutrix gave her story, to the effect that while returning through the Southern Recreation Ground the three accused rushed cut from the side of n tree. Goldsmith caught hold of her, (Jr-dg threw her down, and Hamilton held her by the feet for a minute while she was down. Witness then gave evidence as to (ho assault, and continued— Goldsmith was at her head and put a handkerchief over her throat. Witness screamed once, and was about to scream a second time, when Goldsmith said, “Choke her.” All that Hamilton did was to hold her by the feet for about a minute, and then he went over into the middle of the road. Witness screamed once and was too excited to scream again. Two men and two young women appeared, and then the accused ran away. One of the.women asked witness if she was hurt, and witness answered, “No.” She was severely cross-examined, and admitted having been a prostitute for, a week, and being intimate with the prisoner Hamilton. She did not tell her mistress nhr her mother, Her mistress, in giving evidence, denied the truth of the statement of the girl as to the time of her leaving her house, and stated that when she asked to get ,aw.ay..to come to Court it was .-op the ground; that another, girl; had ? been assaulted, and she was a witness for the defence; -It -'was also- alleged ; that a woman prosecutrix alleged she had been visiting had no existence. After address by counsel, the three defendants were committed for trial, bail being allowed. .
