USEFUL ADVICE TO BOYS.
In the course of an interesting address delivered in Dunedin by the late Eev. A. 0. Gillies, he gave the following useful advice to boys: Train yourselves now to industiy and selfrestraint. As without water one cannot learn to swim, so without hard work you can never rise above the commonplace drone of society. Rely upon your own strength of body and mind. _ Take your star—self-reliance, faith in God, honesty toward man, and persevering industry. Write on your banner “ Luck is a fool; Pluck is a hero.” Think well of yourselves, without being either proud or vain.
Be dignified, not pedantic ; reserved, not haughty. Be neither servile to your superiors nor stern to your inferiors. Be respectful to all, but familiar with no more than one in a thousand outside your own family. Assume your own position; he decided, think for yourselves, and then strike out for the shore. Energy, punctuality, and unconquerable determination, with a pure motive, are the levers that more and raise the world out of the rut of selfishness and make it revolve on a new axis of righteousness, prosperity, and peace. Don’t drink intoxicating liquors; don’t chew tobacco; don’t
smoke. Don’t attend promiscuous balls Don’t swear—a gentleman never does, Don’t lie. Beware of many circuses and theatres. Don’t gamble or bet in any form. Don’t steal. Don’t deceive by wearing two faces—one for our presence and another for our absence. Don't read either common novels or sensational newspapers. Read history, geography, science, travels, and biography. Don’t gossip. Respect the aged, the moral, and the educated. Don’t marry until you are able to
keep house comfortably. Be in earnest. Don’t trifle, but cultivate wit and humor of a high and pure order. Enjoy a good joke. Laugh heartily now and then; I suspect those who don’t. Be independent without being insolent, and be selfreliant without being self-conceited. Advertise your business, yet not so as to injure others in the same line. Make money honestly, and then do good with it. Don’t die rich ; it’s a bad sign. Enjoy the heaven of seeing your money doing good to others around you. Work hard, study faithfully, and determine to he second to none in point of honest wealth, charity, knowledge, manners, and moral purity. Whatever ypji do do thoroughly, Fear God, love your parents, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, and fellow beings in general. Be careful of your own and everybody else’s moral character and reputation. Love your country and obey its laws. Love truth, honor, and virtue. Study your Bible, live according to its requirements, and you will be happy for ever. !
