The report that 11.M.5, Nelson has been handed over to New South Wales is unfounded. The Nelson will be replaced by the Northampton. Died suddenly, Mr John Carter, Registrar of Titles, of Victoria. The Treasury ‘ has cabled to the colonies respecting the mails, and show a disposition to haggle over the matter. Burgoyno and Co., wine merchants, have offered a fifty-guinea prize for colonial wines exhibited at the Melbourne Exhibition, on tha same terras as for a similar prize offered at the Adelaide Exhibition,
Two hundred and sixty bags of Queensland sugar hare been sold at auction at 12s 6d per cwt. The Shaw Savill steamship Doric arrived at Plymouth yesterday (Wednesday) evening, with her cargo of frozen mutton in good condition. The P. and 0. steamship Massilia, from Melbourne (August 9tL), arrived at Plymouth this morning. Arrived—Barque Easter Hill, from Auekland (June 11th). Sept. 30. The hoarseness from which the Crown Prince of Germany was suffering is now gone. Dr Richard Quain has bequeathed £75,000 to the University College, London. It is reported that Lord Loftus has effected a settlement with his creditors. The Marquis of Normanby sails . for Sydney on 29th October. The Jockey Club at York hare warned the Marinis of Ailesbury, and John Tyler, his trainer, off the turff for life, owing to the suspicious running of the horse Everett in the Harewood Plate.
Dr Gray, of Diberon, has declined an engagement for the Scots Church, Melbourne. Oct. 1. The Guardian states that if Stephens’ divorce in New South Wales is unretoed the clergy have the right to refuse to remarry divorced persons or allow them the rights of communion. The Daily News considers it would bo a serious step to veto the divorce, and would lead to grave trouble. The Jockey Club are satisfied that the Marquis of Ailesbury has previously been guilty of unfair running. The Times considers that the Marquis should be excluded from the House of Lords.
Two hundred Russian officers, disguised as priests, are proceeding to Abyssinia to oppose the Italians there. Pesth, Sept. 29.
The Hungarian Parliament was opened to-day. The Speech from the Throne stated that the relations with Foreign Powers were friendly, but the general situation required the strengthening of the military power. The Government would strive to maintain peace, and it was believed that it was assured in the future. Berlih, Oct. 1. Signor Criapi, the Italian Premier, is expected to arrive at Friedriobruh to-day on a visit to Prince Bismarck. Capetown, Oct. 1.
The Shaw Savill B.s. Coptic left here to-day for New Zealand. Amongst the passengers for Australia are the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.
